Fully agree.. its a bit off putting to tell you the truth. Its like unless the card is 50-70% better than a previous gen its just not good enough for them. Whatevs, these cards look great, especially for people like myself who are still on < 680.

yep. Ultimately, where crossfire works good, my setup will be at least on par with a 980. but the idea of running a single card with more vram, that runs super quiet is appealing. Plus, I'm one of those people who buy games on release and sometimes there's multi gpu issues (red and green) on release. Running a single gpu again would be awesome. Then I can add another one later, if I so wish.

You said Nvidia released GTX680 because it had no competition, inferring that if it had competition they would have released GK110 (780Ti) in March 2012. 780Ti is 561mm2, GTX680 is 294mm2. If they had released a 780Ti sized chip in March 2012 on 28nm it would have been insanely expensive. TSMC could barely manufacture 294 with decent yields, there was no way they were doing a 561 chip at that time.

Those days are long gone. It was back in the day, when we had 3Dfx Voodoo, Matrox, Nvidia were starting to teeth, also AMD... everyone was just trying to beat the rest of the field. Now we only have 2 manufacturers, they both know what the other team is doing and they act accordingly.

I would stop wasting my time on these nay sayers if I was you, some people have no knowledge on the matter and only copy 'n paste stuff they read somewhere ages ago.

Honestly, i expected them to pull this crap - it was obvious that when they could successfully pull it off with kepler, then they would repeat it with maxwell.

    Crap? how so?

Oh, I see, you expected 1.5x performance, or so? lol, you need to get your head checked. Why would they do that?

The truth may lie in the middle - gtx 780 came 14 months later, so still a little late :)

I mean I get why people are upset about it I just don't get what people expect Nvidia to do.

From a business perspective they need to maintain cashflow throughout the year. Their next available major architecture won't be ready until mid-late 2016. If they release GM210 right now, what is their income going to be for the next two years? It's not like they can just magically come up with something in between. GM204 is the in between. I just feel like the vast majority of people commenting are doing based on their desire and not in reality. Which is fine until it gets weird and people make it sound like a conspiracy to screw the customer or something.

But really, think about it. If they released a GTX980 GM210 right now, what happens in Q2,Q3,Q4 2015 or Q1, Q2, Q3, 2016 to Nvidia's revenue? It's obviously going to drop because vast majority of people will have already owned the card. And it's not like they have something to release during that time so what happens? "Sorry shareholders no dividends this year because we literally have zero profit".

Like if 90% of people here on Guru3D ran a business it would be belly up in 2 weeks.

No, i expected them to pull this move, but id like them to push the tech, rather than holding it back, while trying to cash in, like intel does, due to the lack of competition.

Imagine the tech we could have had today, if nvidia and intel had really fierce competition...

Some people still think they're owed something. Or that nvidia, AMD, game devs are developing these things for us because they love us. This is no kickstarter, this is a multi million business. agreed.

it's been the same for decades. remember the 386/486? then Pentium 60mhz? then 90mhz? I remember when intel breached 200mhz. They could easily have been running 266mhz then. But they didn't because they didn't have to. And it would be commercial suicide. So why expect anything else now? It's so frustrating reading through some of this naivity. I get it, some kids have no real life experience and are new to the scene, but hey, read up on history before you moan guys.

And that is where the marketing machine comes into play ;-)

I see how the 600-series owners see the 900s as viable upgrade - but their cards came out 2,5 years ago - jeez, I used to upgrade every year a few years back, because performance went up considerably generation-wise - not the case anymore, it seems :-(

Really midrange card that faster than a full gk110. That totally screams midrange to me
    End sarcasm.

    Idk are they?

    GF110, next gen high-end GK110 is literally 100% faster, I dont count these in between gpus GF104 > GK104 > now GM204..

I bet full blown Maxwell GM200/210 will be too, literally 100% faster then GK110.

the 980 is almost on par with 680 sli. that is almost twice the performance, read almost 200% the performance in 2.5 years. Is that really that bad?
