Only that current prices have little to do with MSRP, which hasn't changed for Nvidia cards. And actually, AMD is doing the burning here, Nvidia cards are just bought by miners because AMD can't keep up with demand.

Cash is cash, it pays for R&D and investment. There is no loyalty beyond profit, and rightly so.

It's not as if Nvidia is keeping up with demand either. If they were we wouldn't have this problem and they wouldn't have made this announcement.

Only if you don't burn all your customer's arses so hard they never want to do business with you again.

Not surprising. Nvidia is basically confirming what I have begun to suspect - the mining craze is not dying down. The original Bitcoin mining bubble popped when ASICs were introduced, but such an event is unlikely this time around - unlike before, there are now many different minable altcoins like Ethereum, Litecoin, ZCash and many others, each using their own hashing algorithms. Even if one coin becomes unminable (e.g., Ethereum going PoS) there are plenty of other coins to mine. Unless the entire crypto market crashes, we won't be seeing the bubble pop anytime soon. The memory shortage will also take some time to resolve, as smartphones aren't going away either. This is unfortunately the new reality, and unless something drastically changes, it's best that we learn to deal with it.

I've written before about gamers doing some mining on the side (to drive up the mining difficulty for others, as well as make some money for oneself) and I still think it's the best approach. Complaining endlessly on forums isn't going to achieve anything, and we can't expect others to solve the problem for us. Services like NiceHash make it very easy to mine, and there are plenty of miners or investors willing to buy Bitcoins from you. A few months of mining and you'll make enough to counter the price hikes - it'll probably be the only way to afford that shiny new GTX 2080. I know many gamers are morally opposed to mining, but you need to think practically about these things.

That's not true. Nvidia cards are generally more expensive, but they are just as good for mining as AMD cards. Also, different algorithms favor different cards - AMD cards are great for Ethereum, but Nvidia cards are better for ZCash - and in terms of pure profitability, Nvidia cards would be better overall.

    Thank you :)
For not making me to read "Ride it out. Just wait for the crypto bubble to burst be4 buying new GPU".
Because I think I might punch the hole through my monitor, if I had to read that particular piece of wisdom one more time.

You don't need a formal conspiracy when interests converge. [...] They don't need to call a meeting because they know what is good for them.

^^ My favorite quote from George Carlin. It shuts down large areas of the human interest called conspiracy theories, while at the same time implying that OF COURSE that The Game is rigged.

And in our particular case of GPUs, the soft conspiracy mentioned above, ie. "price fixing without any meetings" - is called FREE MARKET.
As quoted above - AMD/NV don't need to meet, but more than that... they don't even need to "fix" anything. Free market and demand & supply are already doing that for them.
    Ocam's razor... nothing more.
What needs to be fixed has already been fixed by the generations of equally minded business and lawmaking people. And it has largely been done in:
    a) public assemblies
    b) at the very least the proceedings of these meetings have been made public.

Because the public exposure is not only wanted, but required when building consent.
As Carlin said: You don't need a fuking conspiracy when interests converge.

The way I took it when I read this was that nVidia was prepping us for some sticker shock with the MSRP of future cards. I know that their cards are still listed at their original price in their online store, I'm just worried that the next generation of cards will have a baseline price similar to what I'm seeing the current cards going for now. For example, just last week Newegg (the actual retailer, not an independent seller) had some blower style 1080 Ti stock for example, but the price was something ridiculous like $980. I'd hate to see the launch price of say the 2080 be close to a grand simply because they know we have no other options.

I also read the original thread on Massdrop with the comment regarding why the available 1080s were priced so high and to be honest it seemed like total BS. I understand the memory shortage issue, but the situation felt less like "these cards are priced this way because of [canned excuse here]" and more like "we know that even if the gamers that are desperate enough to overpay for these cards don't buy them all at this price, the miners will."

Now that it's one of the best times in over a decade to buy a CPU, RAM and GPU prices spike. It's a racket. They are taking turns having "shortages". Who's next? A case shortage!? PSU shortage!? Motherboard shortage!? OS shortage (then we'll know it's all a joke on us!)!?

I also loved the original Wizardry first on Apple IIe and then on PC. There are plenty of games out there I haven't played. As long as I can keep my 3930K and 1080 running, I'm not upgrading anytime soon. It's still better than any console.

Nvidia 1060 6gb is %15-25 expensive than a PS4 Pro where i live right now. And i am still using a 760gtx... GPU and Ram prices were already insane here and it keeps increasing! I remember i bought my Q6600 8800GT 8gb PC with my 0.8x monthly income 9-10 years ago. And now it's like i need to spend 5x-7x of my montly income to get an avarage pc here. It's getting worse and worse. PC Master Race...

The average smoker in the UK spends over £3500 a year on their habit. Personal wealth has little to do with how I fund my hardware purchases.

That I don't know I done had quit smoking about some 8+ year back because even roll my own was cost to much with a fix incoming.
If I'm real luck I maybe able to save up $250 to $300 year so yes personal wealth play dose key roll

What if i financed my 1080Ti by selling a previous card or hardware, or if it was a gift. To say i must be wealthy because i could afford a 1080Ti when it can out at £695 (as opposed to the current price of £850) is pointless.

Nothing to do with luck, I skip generations with all hardware so was coming from a 780gtx, I knew mining was gathering pace and that mid range cards would be the defacto choice for many, I had the money saved up so it wasn't a hard choice. The card, like those before will last me a while.

give this man a lolly - he thinks his so cool on paying £700 for a gpu :p

I sold my main rig ages ago, got pissed off with the gpu scenario - I dare say the bug will bite me again later on. If it does it will be when memory and gpu's come down. Other and that web browsing is all i need to do at the moment. The urge to play games comes over me now and then, its a sad addiction that could take me down that expensive route again :(
