Agreed. Many games from Eastern Europe tend to be poorly optimized in my experience and Metro 2033 is certainly no different. I think I've only just been able to run the game at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out, including 4xMSAA and the ridiculous depth of field effect that drains performance but is otherwise barely noticeable when playing IMO. One can only hope that the sequel is better optimized and that is a better game too as the first was a bit of mixed bag... way too short, the A.I. was laughably bad and the combat was mediocre.
