    I've never understood it either.

Competition is a good thing, we absolutely need it.

and i really hope that both the 580 and 6970 or 6990 are the same so people will quit going crazy about a company they don't even own, i mean i understand wanting to vote for something but a piece of hardware come on :)

How about DX11 and tess? It's a big reason, I think, to upgrade!

Yes I read that, I think will be another build of benchmark, never mind, I'm sure: the game will work with AMD cards, after some patches and Crossfire Profiles

Let's wait 6900 series, or first tests, then we will discuss about it!

Well the 5970 is underperforming due to poor 5k series CF scaling, so the next dual GPU card should be alot better.

Still not sure why they couldn't implement the CF improvements on the 5800 cards too, either they must of built broken hardware, in which case they should never of released the 5970, or they just want to keep the improvements with the new 6k cards to keep people upgrading.

My money is on the latter :D

It will be interesting to see the 6990's performance, if the scaling is confirmed to be that much better by end users, I might get tempted ;)

It's not more expensive though is it? Someone has already provided locations of purchase which offer prices lower than a 470...

We're talking about the RRP though, if some retailer is choosing to sell it cheaper, thats up to them, but its not representative of everywhere else.

i dont get this.. why is everyone just assuming its a 512 core card? its not even the same die.. what if the GF110 die has more than 512 cores? I remember articles from when nvidia revealed they were working on the gtx500 series back in april-may saying that the gtx 580 would have ~580 cores (though thats a wierd number of cores to have in there).

+1 to that one... Had problems in the past with ati so will never buy one again.

I also prefer paying the extra doe and getting something that works!!!

will they launch the GTX 560? I want it to use as much W as the hd 5870 and perform better than it, can that happen?

Probably not, but i thought the GTX460's would of been garbage, but ended up buying one, so who knows.

An overclocked GTX460 is only around 20% slower than a 5870, so i suppose its possible, but if the GTX580 is another hot, and power hungry card, then i would probably think not.

Three new GPUs for the 6 first months of 2011: GF110 (768 cores, 512-bit memory bus width) to replace the current GTX 470/480, GF112 (384 cores, 320-bit memory bus width) to update the current GTX 460 and GF119 (96 cores, 64-bit memory bus width) to refresh GT 430 type cards.

Not so relevant this time as the 6970 and 6990 are rumoured to run hot and power hungry as well.

Rumored to, reality could be very different, but im sure AMD will be pushing everything as high as they can to get as much possible out of them, which might have the a little warmer than some would like, seeing the temps of the 6850/6870 kinda makes me think the 6970/6990 could be pretty toasty if they try to beat the GTX480 by too much.

perosmct, where did that info come from?

Yep, it is a rumour but given the fact they are still on 40nm and assuming the 6970 is going to be positioned to compete with/beat the 480, I don't see how they will manage it with a cool, power efficient card.

Time will tell of course as at present, all we have is speculation :)

the GTX 480 has a 15-20% performance lead over the 5870. AMD has had a year to improve on their Cypress core. the 6970 will not be an OCed Cypress to match the GTX 480.

yes Cayman may not deliver the same perf/watt over Barts, but i'd put my money that it does not come close to GTX 480 power consumption.
