Rebuilding shouldn't be a problem, they got the whole thing laser mapped: https://news.nationalgeographic.com...edral-laser-scan-art-history-medieval-gothic/ Sad as it is, most churches burn down now and then. Part of being a church I guess.
What a shame! The building has seen revolutions, 2 world wars and this happens! Always been one of my favorite buildings. How did the fire start?
The building was undergoing heavy maintenance and something made the wooden structure catch fire which quickly spread. The police is ruling this as an accident. President Macron promised that Notre Dame will be rebuilt and several rich Frenchmen will donate vast sums of money. Unfortunately these acts wont recover the forever lost historical treasures.
I already heard that one billionaire family in Paris said they donate € 100.000.000,- (one hundred million) right away for rebuilding. That's how rich people should spend some money. Sad to see, but it's not the end. At least, for some time there won't be a thousand people line in front of the church to go in.
Largely due to the fact that what you see there as the "roof" actually are just stone blocks (rib-vault ceiling) which carries itself, and the wooden roof on top. So if the wood burns, there's still a chance that the stone stays intact. The water damage might be more to tackle though, since in some of the cathedral's construction techniques, cast iron bars were used, which are not safe from rust, and thus may be an issue down the line. Might not be too bad though. And of course, much of the art inside might be lost, even if the church does not fully collapse. Paintings are destroyed by water as easily as by fire, for instance.
There is rumor it has been intentionally set. Someone filmed a guy walking around the towers. https://twitter.com/TipsyPianoBar/status/1117938596952993793
Some claim it's a guy in a high vis jacket and a white helmet, nothing more. Others claim vastly different things. As always this will create a debate going in the wrong direction (I hope it doesn't happen here).
No one knows how or what happened yet, so a civil adult discussion should be possible. Dont worry , if people start offending i will hand out time-outs.
For all those born into the mobile phone and tablet generation here in the UK, that is not the Blackpool tower. lol
You can see the original video through here in better quality. https://www.politifact.com/facebook...re-was-not-lone-man-dressed-muslim-garb-walk/ I don't know why this conspiracy is spreading around because no terrorist would be dumb enough to not trying to blend in, usually there's quite a bit of planning before those things occur. And most Muslims are not specifically anti-Christian because for them Jesus was a prophet, and not the son of god. In the end this was bound to happen as the top has been described as a forest and well...it burned like one. It's good that so many are willing to cash out for rebuilding it, but I'd rather see this kind of enthusiasm for instance in humanitarian areas. History or not, it's till a building and not a person.
Perhaps, I had this debate with a colleague on the way back from a meeting today, he said that someone had highlighted how they had raised this cash for a building but had little interest in doing something like this for children in Africa. My answer was simple, that £600million will get the building rebuilt, they will see the results. Charities have been raising money for Africa as long as I've been alive (40years) and they are still asking for money and chances are will still be asking for money in another 40 years time. As callous as the answer is it is utterly understandable why they would pledge huge amounts of cash to get something that would be a one off resolve with an obvious final result rather than pledging the cash at what appears to be a never resolve-able bottomless pit.
It's not just about Africa though, they could have since long for instance solved homelessness in France alone. The church could have done that too on its own, but they much rather gather their riches. Of course they have other costs to attend to.. Australia’s Catholic Church Paid $213 Million to 4,445 Children Sexually Abused by Pedophile Priests https://beyondblindfold.com/austral...hildren-sexually-abused-by-pedophile-priests/ It's also notable that this has raised far more concern than the fire in England which killed lots of people. Notra Dame has also been in such poor condition before that they have thought about demolishing it completely, but it seems that Victor Hugo's release of the the book The Hunchback in Notra Dame changed all that. "Popular interest in the cathedral blossomed soon after the publication, in 1831, of Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris (in English, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). This led to a major restoration project between 1844 and 1864, supervised by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the cathedral's iconic spire."
