First started to notice them in Diablo 3 and i was not the only one, but SWTOR has the same problem, Grim Dawn has this too, just not as noticeable like in D3 or in SWTOR. But not all ppl experiencing them. Original D3 thread Is there any way to get rid of those ugly lines in effects? :3eyes:
Nope. According to the quite long D3 thread(s), it has not been solved for the.... 1.5 or something years since it has been reported and filed as a bug report (to Blizzard). Some are speculating that it is something of an issue between AMD drivers for GCN and/or something with the way the games were coded (but they work fine on pre-GCN).
Same. Have a lot of investment in time in both D3 and SWTOR. Don't have those issues. Never had those. And I'm really picky about such things. Tho, it was 6 month ago since I played D3 or SWTOR last time...
saw the very same thing shown on the 2nd pic ONCE while diving in Shadow complex. Seems to be a driver bug.
You have to look very carefully. All GCN devices have soft particle "clipping". Everyone in the D3 thread that claimed they didn't have it and posted screenshots actually had them (they aren't noticeable in action, and the skills happen very fast, but once you know where to look you'll see them). @gassenn Yes, it seems to be GCN only.
One of the many problems with dx9 that GCN has since release (as if dx11 is in a better state...). As much as I hate to say things never worked as they should with dx9 and GCN. I always regreted my decision to buy the hd 7750, should had got an hd 5770/6770 or nvidia...
In this project author says: "Soft Particles is a rendering technique for eliminating clipping artifacts that appear when 2D particle billboards intersect with a 3D environment. " Image from this article about soft particles: Left using "hard" particles, in right soft particles. It's like GCN can't or won't use soft partices in dx9 render path and the result are those ugly lines.
Don't want to sound strange, but is situation on GeForce different? Soft particles in DX9? I remember Bioshock only supporting soft particles in DX10
At least for D3, the game isn't coded to use soft particles. It's not a driver bug; the devs just didn't make the game that way. Soft particles are really quite expensive, and a lot of games don't use them for this reason. I have a GCN amd GPU, and it renders soft particles fine in games that support it (Crysis), but obviously shows clipping in games like D3 that don't.
All those screenshots are low detail mode in games or very old. Most of those are just flat fog textures/animated textures. Those are bound to collide with other geometry, creating those ugly lines in process. Maybe at higher details some of those games will use volumetric fog instead. I do not have single game shown, so I can't test.
Havn't logged in for a looong time, but you' ve got my attention. Especially considerring i want to buy 390/970 right now and also playing SWTOR. Turns out quick search through youtube videos highlights the very same problem on nvidia cards also - there is no rendering of soft particles in SWTOR. Proof of this on nvidia 970: 2:18 into the video during explosion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeSyyR0xuVQ Click to enlarge still image of that moment: So, now you can feel relaxed about the grass beeing greener in the team green =) Also, when i was searching on that matter i've found this article on nvidia official site about soft particles. English is not my native language, but if i udnerstood correctly this technology is active and working only under Direct X 10. Here is the link to this nvidia article: http://developer.download.nvidia.com/whitepapers/2007/SDK10/SoftParticles_hi.pdf ps thank you for pointing this bug out btw, now i can safely buy 390 not worring about it's inability to render `soft particles` =)). pps funny how no nvidia players were onto this matter/concern because it's a directx thing, involving both sides - red and green. I guess some players simply won't admit problems or don't want to see truth... =)
I noticed this effect in WoW last night. It's probably been there all along but I never paid attention to it. Edit: Spelling.
Lavcat, absolutely agree! You know what's funny? As soon as i read op my brain subconscious was telling me: you know this is true - you see this literally on EVERYDAY basis... Guess what?) Go is no exception: Wonder how smoke renders in GO in directx 11 though...
Maybe it is the same case on both side in SWTOR, but sadly in Diablo 3 the grass is greener on the green/nv team (and with old amd cards), why can't amd or blizzard fix the lines with gcn cards. :cussing:
