So I've got hd radeon 7970 gpu and an fx-8350 cpu.
This is my power supply: XFX ProSeries Core Edition 550W PSU
I want to overclock the gpu, but I am very uncertain for how far I can overclock it as I dont know if the Powersupply will hold. Will it? And how much could I push for overclocking the 7970 which has a base core clock on 925 mhz? Thanks for help. Is there any way to do a super safe overclock so you'll know if it hits either max voltage/degrees?

edit: Overclocked gpu to 1070 mhz coreclock and 1575mhz memory. Dont know why I couldnt achieve a higher coreclock, didnt work to increase powerlimit to 20%, and I couldnt figure out how to change the voltage to higher numbers, probably locked I guess?

How much other stuff like hard drives etc hooked up.Overclocking the cpu?Your power supply is already pretty close.

7970/280X is a 250W TDP card +20% increase on power limit. You call that more than enough on a 550W PSU? No, hes pretty close and we dont even know if his CPU is overclocked as well (probably it is).

Or other things hooked up 550 and overclocking usually aren't in the same sentence.

    It'll be fine.

    Well below 550 watts.

Built a PC with 780ti with voltage OC + 4670k at 4.8, about 300 watts under full load.

Even if you add 100w for OC FX it's still well below 550.

I recently overclocked my hd radeon 7970 gpu to 1070mhz core clock, and 1575mhz memory. I simply couldnt get the 7970 to over 1070 mhz, no matter if I had power limit at 0 or 20%, and I couldnt change the stock voltage either. Is this still considered a good overclock?

It's good overclock. There higher overclocks, but it depends on card quality and brand (EVGA, etc....).

Make sure to compare stock with overclock results, you should be happy.
