No CLI.exe in Catalyst 7.2???????

Ok today I updated to Catalyst 7.2 from 7.1. Went to the ATI driver's website and downloaded the complete package: display drivers, Catalyst Control Center, and WDM drivers. Prior to this I used Driver Cleaner Pro and RegSupreme Pro to clean out all the bits and pieces of old ATI drivers and registry entries still in my PC, so I consider this a pretty clean install. Turns out, as soon as my PC boots up after the installation, I can't open Catalyst Control Center because a little message pops up that says "CLI.exe cannot be located" or something like that. I know CLI.exe is some important process of some sort since I've seen it in my Windows Task Manager, so what's the problem?

P.S. I installed .NET Framework 2.0 and reinstalled Catalyst. Didn't help.

The messages from my PC have changed; they no longer say "CLI.exe cannnot be located." Instead,

This is the little window that appears when I start up windows and it tries to locate CCC:

And this is the window that comes out when I try to start Catalyst Control Center manually:

    Help, anybody???

Never mind, I solved my own dilemma. Removed Catalyst 7.2 and reinstalled 7.1. Everything's fine now. Looks like not all of ATI's driver updates do anything to improve upon old ones. At least this one didn't for me.

CLI.exe is a process which used to be associated with the proper functioning of CCC. It used to be a process which would either need to be present, or need to be started each and every time you would open CCC. Now, since you are getting an error stating that CLI.exe cannot be found, I'm assuming that your registry entries are pointing at the wrong value.

So, my solution: Reinstall the drivers, but do it exactly as I describe below:

    1) Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the driver components in this order! Don't reboot before I tell you to.

    a) Catalyst Control Center
    b) ATI Display Driver
    c) ATI - Software Uninstall Utility

    2) Download and install CCleaner. It is a nifty program which I'll trust over RegSupreme any day. It is not bloated, and if you don't wish to keep it after we're done, you can safely uninstall it without having to worry of it having left anything behind.

    3) Reboot your PC.

    4) Go to Safe Mode, by tapping F8 during the black screen with ~4 or 5 lines of text which comes before the Windows loading screen, and then selecting Safe Mode as the startup type, and Windows XP for the OS.

    5) Log on to an administrator account (doesn't matter which one, but I'd suggest you use your own), and once at your desktop, start Driver Cleaner Pro.

    6) In the Cleaning selection, tick "Select multiple cleaning filters" and choose the following:
    - ATI
    - ATI CCC
    - ATI Uninstall Utility
    - ATI WDM
Then press the "Start" button, and after it's done cleaning, close the program.

    7) Start CCleaner and go to the "Issues" section.

    8) Tick all of the filters, and run the scanner, remembering to create a registry backup when it automatically prompts you to.

    9) Run the scanner again as many times as needed until nothing shows up at the screen.

    10) Reboot and install your drivers in normal mode as you usually would.

*Notice: You should perhaps use ATI Tray Tools instead of CCC. It's much better in every aspect. Also, you do not need to ever install WDM drivers if you have a card that is not VIVO compliant.

EDIT: Oooh crap, you posted some critical information while I was typing... :frown: You might still want to give 7.2 a try following the instructions above though. ;)

Have you tweaked the drivers? You should, as you'll probably gain some performance from that as well. I saw a nice improvement in HL2: Lost Coast after I tweaked my driver. Just go to Tweaks and make the Standard and Advanced Tweak windows look like mine:

Oh yeah, and while you're in Advanced tweaks, select Advanced OGL tweaks from the current database menu, and tick the "Export openGL 2.0 procedures" box.

Thanks for all the excellent replies, you guys. It's good knowing that people with a lot of knowledge in this area are are offering their expertise. :approval:

By the way, now that I kind of know a little more about CLI.exe and CCC, should I just remove CCC manually from the Control Panel and install ATT without clearing any registry entries??? Or do what Decane suggested in his first post and clear out all the registry bits and pieces for CCC? I only want to remove CCC so that I can install ATI Tray Tools, as everyone seems to say that the latter offers performance boosts.

BTW I think I have already done a thorough, if not very good, registry cleanout with RegSupreme and Driver Cleaner Pro of all the remains of the problematic Catalyst 7.2 drivers. I'm sticking with Catalyst 7.1, or at least its display driver, until something more stable comes out.

I suppose you can just uninstall CCC (though I would uninstall everything, but that's just me ;)). Make sure to follow the procedure I posted before though, ie: First uninstall via Add/Remove, then boot into safe mode and run DC Pro but only for CCC this time. Then run CCleaner until it doesn't find anything to fix and then just reboot and install Tray Tools.

Also, I strongly suggest getting familiar with this: http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html ;)

Thanks Decane, I'll do just that. By the way, what is the latest version of ATI Tray Tools?

I looked in this guide, but it didn't give me too much info about overclocking in ATI Tray Tools. So I'm wondering, when I go into "Hardware" and then "Overclocking Settings," in the "Overclocking Method" selection, do I choose Low-level or Driver-level? Which is better and will give me the greatest overclocking potential, assuming that they are in any way different? And for some reason in ATT my overclocking profile keeps reverting back to the default clock speeds whenever I reboot my system, even though I saved the OC'ed clock speeds in that profile previously.

If anyone can help me, I would be grateful. I'm kinda of a n00b in regard to ATI Tray Tools...

It might be better idea to ask that question in ATT forum. Its hosted here on guru3d just browse down a bit to find it . Oh and thanks a lot Decane for the very nice tweak tips!

Well I followed your every step and I'm still getting MOM errors, can't run any 3D app without MOM monitoring bitching at me.

This 7.2 set for XP are totally bogus as far as I'm concerned.

Since I changed to these settings I've started getting strange random reboots, and fool that I am I didn't make a note of the default settings to change back. Uninstalling & reinstalling traytools doesn't help.
Could someone post a screenie of the default Advanced D3D Tweaks screen settings so I can change them back to see if that stops the problem?
    Cheers.

Chances are that the Advanced D3D Tweaks are not responsible for the reboots, but in any case, here are the defaults:

"Support for Non power of two size textures" - Check
    "Primary Tiling" - Check
All others - green box (no value)

If changing to defaults gets rid of the problem, you can always start enabling the options one by one until you've found the culprit, and if it doesn't get rid of the problem, you can safely enable these again as they should improve performance in some games, and have just been proven not to be malicious by you (since you just found that they are not the culprit of your crashing).

Would someone be able to help me out with this problem.
With ATI TT installed, i now have what I believe is frame rates showing in the top right corner. If I am right, while playing Caesar IV, I am only getting 10(turns red) or below.
I am hoping my equipment is just not powerful enough. I have adjusted the following tweaks. My in game graphic settings are mid range settings. No weather options enabled.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Uuh, well the obvious thing to try would be to disable all the tweaks and see if that helps. If it doesn't, the tweaks aren't the culprit of your performance issues. The default Advanced Tweaks for Direct3D are as follows:

"Support for Non power of two size textures" - Check
    "Primary Tiling" - Check
All others - green box (ie, no value)
