So the Evga 480 video card has finally died.
Thinking about replacing it with a Nvidia 1660 super....... Thoughts?

 

A 1660 should be a great replacement. Even some cheaper cards would also be a pretty significant boost. In 2020, I think a 480 falls somewhere between entry level (gtx1030/rx550) and upper entry level (gtx1050/rx560).

A Sandy bridge i5 is still pretty solid for gaming, even now. Hard drive tech is skyrocketing lately though.

So I went with the Gigabyte 1660 super triple fan gpu from Microcenter. Installed and everything is running fine. Had initial driver issue but driver sweeper utility fixed everything. Just realized that I am almost completely out of space though. The 120gb ssd boot drive is almost full and the D: 1tb for applications and games is practically full as well. Any recommendations for a 1tb ssd to put games in?

 

Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 if SATA.
Brand Intel or Samsung if nvme / m.2 (bc of dedicated driver).

 

Can my motherboard even support nvme or a m.2 card??

Nvme, no? But the ones you listed should work fine. You really won't notice a difference in performance, just pick whatever fits your budget.

Crucial is a lot cheaper than the 860 and much older, but still a good buy. It's cheap ssd storage but as @jbscotchman said before you won't notice a difference in most if not all situations. Crucial is about 90 euros for 1TB in my area while the 860 (non QLC!) is about 120 to 140 euros. I personally tend to think Samsung drives are a little bit "snappier" when clicking. But that may be my own feeling, probably not worth 30 to 50 euros difference in price.

Just purchased the Crucial MX 500 1tb ssd from Amazon.... I wonder if my mobo has enough sata ports. Also got some new thermal paste to replace the original paste from 2012.....

 

That's just your bias playing tricks on you. Both drives suffer from using SATA and perform identical as a result. You literally have to run benchmarks to see any performance difference. I have actually owned the 500GB SATA versions of both drives.....

Crucial MX500: 560/510 MB/sec..
Samsung 860: 550/520 MB/sec..

 

Yup I currently have a 2TB MX500 in my main PC for games and its just as fast/snappy as the Samsung 500GB drive I have in my living room PC. Got it on offer too on black friday for £140 was meant to be £250 at the time, currently goes for around the £190 mark.

 

Hold off we're so close to the release of new cards onto the market; which will bring down prices. Buy something that's just a piece of junk for now or don't use your PC for a few more months.
