Hi all, i need new VGA, my old 8800GTX died long time ago so i bought HD 4850 with 1GB mem. She works just fine but i want something stronger. My CPU-s are 2 Xeon E5430 with 4 cores each, 8GB DDR2 FBB ECC RAM in quad channel, 1000W PSU on BTX Dell motherboard.

I found some cards that fit in my budget and here they are:

    1. Nvidia GTX 460 1GB

    2. Nvidia GTX 465 1GB

    3. Nvidia GTX 470 1028MB

    4. AMD/ATI HD5850 1GB

    5. AMD/ATI HD6870 1GB

    Which one should i take?

I would prefer the HD6870 or GTX470... both are the powerful card for AMD and Nvidia that you listed

What would be the purpose of video card?

If you into gaming, go for 6870 without a doubt.
Nvidia 560 would be also good pick, but its not in your list.

nvidia 4xx series are outdated and not really worth going for. But it again depends on your needs.

gtx470 and 6870 are about equal in performance. Except the former runs hotter and louder and consumes more power.

Why are there no current generation cards on that list? I would get 7770, 7850 1GB or 7850 2GB. 7770 is around 2x as fast as 4850

depends. if he finds a cheap 2nd hand gtx 470 with a good cooler, he's on to a winner. look at my gtx 480. I paid £160 for it when a similar gtx 570 cost £250+. it came with a Thermalright Shaman cooler that keeps everything very quiet and cool. so yeah, I wouldn't write the gtx 4xx series off. if you find them for the right price, they're very good value for money.

GTX 470 with an aftermarket cooler. Id had one oced to 915mhz/4400 memory and that was faster than one of my 580s stock. 470 blows 6870 out of the water. But id still go for a GTX 660 or 7870 though

    @ zombie

What’s the budget and where are you planning on buying from?

Hard to make a recommendation without knowing the prices of the cards you listed.

Also agree with the above couple posts about not writing the 470 off, still a decent performer and nice upgrade from your current card if the price is right.

I'll buy used card, new cards are way too much expensive for my budget. My sister lives in Germany and she'll byu a card for me, i just need to decide which one and tu find money :)

My budget is 100-120 euro, i checked the market and there are listed cards in that price range.

In that case, from that list, I’d go with the 470 (depending on price) – only based on past experience and fact that the one I have overclocks like mad while remaining stable... evga reference.

good, and what would you use video card for? Gaming, watching videos or just browsing?

If for gaming, what games you looking forward to play and what quality you'd like to play on?
