    Hi everyone

I've been looking for some new speakers for a while to replace my aging soft dome tweeter setup (Mission 754 front with AE tweeters, AE Aegis centre + surrounds).
I found some speakers that sound way too good to be true, but customer feedback is so positive and the guy who sells them really knows his stuff.

They are the IPL S5TL, Ribbon Transmission Line speakers.
    http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/S5tl Kevlar 2.htm
    Basic specs
    8 ohm
    91dB
200W (edit in 2020: now rated up to 1KW amp)
22Hz to 30KHz +or- 1 db (250 to 20 kHz) <- strange way to show the response but hey.

Being a DIY kit the price is way lower than I expected, so instead of getting just a front pair, I can get a complete surround setup for less than I was going to spend on just the front pair!
So these have been added to the order.

    M3M Ribbon surrounds

    AVC3 Ribbon Centre
    http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/ipl_avc3_shielded_centre_speaker.htm
The complete kit with Walnut veneers costs just over £1300 !!!
(I already have a good sub so that isnt included)

I cant believe the price, they are quality ribbon speakers!
As it costs the guy 5% for Visa, I'm sending a cheque, it should be around 2 weeks before I get them.
    Cant wait :D

These look such a bargain, why arent they more widely known?
Anyhow, I thought it would be good to pass this on.

Agreed. Well I am really interested in your findings, so let us know when you get them together and burned in and have time to check them out. I know there are different sets there. If you are talking about the IPL S5TL, Ribbon Transmission Line speakers.
Tower type speakers, aren't the best for near feild listening.

If they are really close to you they may not sound as good as a set meant for such a task. However, I am just saying based on looking at them I have never tested them so I am not sure. Usually for PC tasks people go with a bookshelf type speaker.
Maybe you might want to ask the company about using them for such tasks.

Sure, I may report on the build as it happens.

Yes I am looking at the S5TL.
I've spent years looking at different designs and the problems with integrating different speaker types and why some are so expensive and tough to drive.
Initially, I wanted an electrostatic based design but they cost, are tricky to integrate with woofers and need maintaining.
Ribbon is my next favourite so I'm really glad to have found what appear to be good designs that arent bank breaking.

The speaker fronts will be about 3.5 metres away so near-field issues arent a problem.
I use the PC from a couch currently to a 42" TV, as my projector died.
The projector refund money is how I am funding the new speakers :)
(I'm waiting for LED/laser projectors to become mainstream now, its too expensive otherwise)

I just found that the crossovers come as components not pre-built.
So I will see if they can supply better components, might as well do a good job.
I have an electronics background but havent kept up much with audio components so I hope you can help me with something.

Is there any reason not to use a solid core inductor?
Open air inductors seem to be the norm but you need a hell of a lot of copper to get high Henries, they are prone to external magnetic influence, can affect external electronic devices and will be influenced if placed in a shielded box.
    Thanks

    Cheque has been sent.
I gave Ivan a call and inquired about crossover components.
He said to not even think of changing them as the speakers and crossovers are very finely tuned!
I've called him twice and both times he has answered quickly and he has called me back in a timely fashion as well.
Pre-sales has been very good, he volunteers a lot of information and help.
He is willing to discuss all aspects of hifi setup and environment.

I told him about the S5TL review from 2004, he hadnt seen it before!
    He was quite happy.

The fun starts in a couple of weeks :)

That's good that he is willing to hand you lots of info.
I would think his X-overs are tuned to the drivers and enclosure as they need to be.
Let us know when you get the kit in and have them built and tested.

    Cheers guys.

The full kit arrived today and its damn heavy!
I'm still sorting the spare room out for the build so it will be a while before I get going.
Some photos will be forthcoming when I start unpacking them.

Does anyone know of a good free image host that keeps photos up for a long time?
(I dont have much use for image hosting so am not wise)

Yes, its as good as I was hoping.
The crossovers are bags of bits, just the S5TL crossover parts weigh 1 Kilo!! :)

Sure, I'll pass on my experience.
I'll probably log the build here as well if thats ok?

The build instructions for the S5TL are very detailed, 14 sides of A4.
I need to get a few tools, glues etc.
    The crossovers are tunable, nice.
The crossover boards have full size diagrams to show exactly how to build.
    I'm looking forward to this.
