I never bothered turning it off since temps are fine, I also bought it to have 8 threads. :)

Cinebench15 or x264HD decoding worse case scenario core0 73C rest between 65-70C @ 4.7ghz with 1.28v. Its also what DC gets now with "improved temp" same voltage/freq. most cases with similar cooler..

Otherwise Im always bellow 60C in normal scenario. 4.6ghz is even better, 4.5ghz @ 1.17v looks ideal and never gets hot.
Ok expect Prime95 28.4 but imo that is pointless burn-in test for Haswell+ cpus. X264 HD 5.01 is more tough when it comes to overall cpu stability :nerd:

Make sure you put the ssd on a 6gb/s sata 3 port. I had mine on a 3gb/s port for a few months and just changed the sata port today. Big boost there. Was being lazy letting it go all this time.

Well on the board that I chosen I dont have to worry about that because all the sata ports are 6gb/s ports.

Did 3gb/s ports get phased out maybe? My mb is over 3 years old and I only have 2 6gb/s ports. Just enough for my ssd and my 1tb wd black.

Yes, as far as I can tell. Z87 on up doesn't seem to offer them anymore.

Ok Since I purchased a Corsair Carbide Air 540 case. I was wondering if it would be beneficial for me to have 3x 120mm front intake fans or 2 140mm intake fans?

2x 140 will be quieter and probably move more air around it too.

I'd be more inclined to think the 3 120mm would move more air but the 2 140's would be quieter.

How common is the black screens with the r9 290s now a days compared to back at launch time? Have they increased or decreased over time?

Unless you get really old stock I doubt it's going to be a problem. I haven't heard anything about it for a while.

If you have the 290 throw her in you current rig and play around a little. I ran a 295 on an amd opty system for a few days while I was getting my other parts, just expect a huge bottleneck with the q6600

I could do that but id rather not due to my current rig's PSU is in a very weaken state where I cant even leave a usb drive turned on before I turn on my PC because it wont boot.

Well I have it up and running with the stock cooler and man I thought the stock cooler was defective because it wasn't making correct contact with the CPU which caused the temp to be 88C but after tinkering with it got installed properly and the temps lowered to around 50C. The stock cooler is just for testing purposes and burnin.

I was poking around a Carbide Air 540 a couple weeks ago at a local Microcenter and came away really impressed with the case. I really like the split layout, as long as you have the room for the wider footprint.

I'd also agree with getting a 290 over a 280x, just make sure you get a model with a nice cooler. I love my Vapor-X, and haven't had a single black screen issue or anything liek that since I picked it up in April. Really, I'd be surprised if you had black screens with any card that isn't an old reference model - and you really don't want one of those anyway unless you are going to water cool it.

I chose the Sapphire Tri-x R9 290 since the vapor x was too pricey.

The Tri-X is still a really nice card. I had fully intended to pick one up until the Vapor-X launched just as I was getting ready to buy.

Well here is an update with the new rig. I got the h110 installed and is working like a charm. Temps on the UEFI/BIOS are idling around 27-28C. The next step is installing the GPU. & hard drives + optical drive then installing the OS.
