I upgraded a windows 10 computer from a socket 775/ddr2 to a 1150/ddr3 and when I turned it on it loaded all drivers in under 5min....Everything was same as before.

    I thought that was cool.

Sure they can.....Don't check that terms and conditions box and see what happens.

No. It's absolutely 100% marketing, unquestionably decided upon due to insistence from their marketing department. The decision has nothing to do with any subject or argument other than making more money.

As a long time distro-hopper and old hand at trying to ditch Win for another Os i completly agree.
Just don't wait for the final push, just get yourself out of the confort zone and start little but sure; awareness should be a bit stirred by all this small increments lost to your choice.

Apple has done this for decades. It went a step further than just the cpu. It extended to things like USB ports. That was the whole argument back then. Apple forced one to upgrade the os version to gain newer hardware compatibility. Microsoft is pulling plays out of the Apple playbook.

Jesus Christ on a skillet! Bold move to push sales on Windows 10 wow. I don't know what's worse, this or shutting down Console game servers by Sony and Microsoft for online only games....thanks for the money now suck a d**k. Oh buy our new sh*t so we can stop supporting that also.

It's always about money but I think it's also about saving money in the long run as it costs MS more money to develop updates for two or more operating systems than it does to just develop for one, Windows 7 has had it's day and while Windows 10 isn't perfect it's still a step forward,

Personally I felt like i'd never leave Windows 7, it had everything I needed but I don't regret moving to Windows 10 despite all the teething problems because I know I won't have to worry about support issues like this.

W10 is the best OS i have used in the last 20 years or so.

Saying that, this isn't even a very aggressive marketing strategy like the the thread title suggests, it's actually just common sense.

Well, it has nothing to do with MS's updates, those are set to be cut off in 2020 and 2023 regardless. It's just a scumbag move to attempt to push people towards Windows 10 and make some extra cash.

I moved to Windows 10 pretty much as soon as I knew I had working drivers for it. I was eager for a new OS since I couldn't tolerate Windows 8/8.1, that disgusting experiment was a mess in more ways than one. I knew I needed Win 10 anyway due to upcoming Windows 10 exclusive (in terms of PC OS) games. But Windows 10 has been a lot more of a pain than Win 7 ever was, mostly due MS's invasive marketing BS baked into it causing me problems. Such as multiple times doing forced updates which broke functionality, the latest being my USB drivers.

So yeah, it was worth the upgrade, but it's been a lot more painful than it had to be, and has little to do with MS being scum.

Apple enjoys 50% or greater adoption rates for MacOS within 3 months for most every release because the OS is actually moving forward, unlike windows.

Windows 7 has been increasing in market share for the past 6 months, windows 10 has also been increasing at around the same or slightly lesser rate.

You know you released a terrible OS while even though it can run on many different form factors and was FREE for the first year, windows 7, an OS released almost a decade ago, and can only run on the desktop, is actually giving windows 10 a run for its money.

The same thing happened with XP though, some people will just hold onto the older one as long as they can, then at one point most move over and those left behind get derided for not keeping up and accused of holding everyone else back.

I kinda get it, as i was the same when XP was released and i went out of my way to remove it from every PC i toucheds and replaced it with 98SE.

As for spyware for the CIA, Linux would be a much bigger target than Window every would.

Edit: Skimmed and misread. But it's still a different scenario. 98 to XP like XP to Vista came with compatibility woes. Going immediately from 7 to 10 was relatively painless in terms of drivers/compatibility. A lot of Windows 8 drivers straight up worked. People just don't like it because it collects every last bit of data it can from you and forces updates, not to mention injects mother ****ing ads right into your OS if you use a Microsoft account.
For corporations maybe, but definitely not in general. Windows is still what 95% of average Joes use at home.

I think if Microsoft made a good new os there wouldn't be so much push back.

Think one of the biggest sticking points is that updates being forced down ones throat. There is no reason for this. Home version ok. That can be the install and forget about it version. Other versions should have the ability to patch at one's discretion.

The whole business model is changing though. They are slowly moving everything to a subscription base model. Programs are all housed in the cloud and a subscription is paid to have access to it. Nvidia is moving in that direction too. Remember the whole thing about their servers doing all the rendering. So all we will effectively own are new versions of dummy terminals.

    @Extraordinary
or XP/7 with eye candy/aero turned off...
dont like it, even with dark mode enabled.

    @others
last time i checked, drivers get verified/signed by MS, not the manufacturer of the card. so if i have to mess with win just to be able to install the drivers (which work fine on any other os), cause MS cant get their act together?

but ppl blaming me for "not knowing", and calling the card crappy (without even knowing which one it is)? ok...

and when ppl that work on drivers (incl 10) say that it's still buggy (vs 7 at the same point in time) and needs lots of patches/updates/fixes,
or that even with an admin account and all security crap turned off,
win still asks me "10 times" "are you sure..." when installing a effin driver/software, doesn't make me wanna switch at all.

the fact that drivers for the new cpus/mainboards are available for win 7 (contrary to MS stating they wont support it), and i can install updates from packs/offline, so the only ppl that are at risk (infections etc) and get "hurt", are those that dont know much about stuff, and dont wanna spend another 100$ just to have 10 (instead of 7/vista), when buying parts to upgrade their system.

if MS would completely switch to x64 and drop x86, fine. as long as they dont,
its just another way of saying "bend over please, we want to charge you so we can do less (work)".

maybe they should have spend all that money they wasted on the phone os, on win 7/8/8.1 support...

one more thing: can anyone show me, where MS says on the win 7 agreement, that i cant use the latest hardware with it?

When NT was first released, it was very hardware specific. It never really changed that much as far as hardware compatibility. When VISTA was first released there were driver issues. Manufacturers were not very good at supplying drivers. Microsoft may at there own discretion issue a generic driver.

Where does one download printer drivers? Microsoft? Think not. If the manufacturer of the hardware fails to support there own product past a certain point it falls on the os provider? I bought a scanner that was Win98 ready. It is now Microsoft's responsibility to provide a driver for it? I had a third generation DVD player from Toshiba. They refused to update it past a certain point. So, in order to be able to play dvds produced after that point, had to buy another player. Rest assured it was not from Toshiba. I would not purchase anything from that manufacturer again till they had a proven track record of supporting there products to your liking.
