The Verge has an interesting news item today, Microsoft has announced a change to its support policy that lays out its plans for future updates to its older operating systems, and the new rules mean ...

New processors will only work with Windows 10

I know Microsoft is doing this to force adoption but it will benefit optimisiation and performance massively in the long run. Computer tech has always run on fast cycles, businesses still run xp now but with the features of win 10 they could probably get a lot more productivity, a forced step forward wouldn't hurt anyone in thelong term.

    it's not marketing, it's evolution.

btw it's the same on major open source's OS, the only difference is that unhappy people can work on making old stuff to work on new (and vice versa)

it's like making XP to work with SSD, or boot with latest CPU... some have passed time to make it possible but M$ as a company cannot spend that time (because time is money :) ).

XP works with an ssd. You just need to disable any scheduled defrag.

It's not about having to spend time. It's only about pushing people into W10 by force for no good reasons.

There appears to be some blow back on current Ryzen as well. ASUS Crosshair VI originally showed drivers for 7, 8.1 and 10. Currently it is only showing drivers for 10. The other boards still show 7 & 10 but for how long? Seems the next bios update will result in Win 7 drivers being pulled like with the Crosshair.

    Internal architectures at MS.

Business 101, sometimes you have to cover for the big guy to keep up healthy relationships. MS is the big guy here and yeah MS's current management are PR and Image proactive. Calling MS' shiny new OS at fault that is already under a lot of spotlight for privacy intrusions, they wont take kindly to another dig at their thread scheduler holding back AMD's new chips.

Hold on, so let me get this right. New CPUs will only be fully supported by Windows 10, is this the same Windows 10 that is being blamed for the lack of performance of the new Ryzen CPU? Yeah f*ck off MS.

I am not sure I understand.
My wife's PC is Skylake based. Windows 7 work perfectly fine with it.
Does this news mean that in future, Windows Update will suddenly refuse to work anymore because the CPU is Skylake or newer?

Meh, it's not like Windows 7 updates since 2014 were necessary. I love how they implement fake messages in order to force Windows 10. Windows 7 still work pretty well with Kaby Lake and Ryzen and you aren't missing much by not using Windows Updates, as long as you have SP1, you're fine.

My windows 7 makes me very happy atm.
If MS doesn't change business model (and I'm sure it won't), I'll probably be testing Linux in the coming years.

Like it or not, Windows is moving to Win10 exclusively. Feel sorry for the people who amazingly, remarkably did not jump on the free giveaway for their PCs during the entire year when they could have done so and had Win10 for free for life--if you roll your own hardware like I do, it's lifetime, as my activation is not tethered to my motherboard or hardware--it is tethered to my Microsoft account. Microsoft is winding down Win7, 8/.1--that's all she wrote. I'm currently on Insider build 15058 and it's really, really nice--makes 7 look like a kludge, and 8/.1 isn't comparable. All future innovation and improvement goes into 10 from now on. The smart move is to get on 10 when the creator's update is finalized and released next month (if you haven't already)--and stay there.

I have upwards of ~300 games installed at home (yes, I know, but I cannot bear to uninstall most of them...;)) and every single one runs without a problem on Win10x64, build 15058. It's so good, in fact, that I began using Insider builds as my main home OS sometime around March 2015 and have stayed there ever since. Though I've accumulated a parade of hardware and software since then, it's all supported and running great on Win10. Not attempting to persuade anyone of anything--this is simply my experience with Win10 thus far.

Why wouldn't they call out the 6xxx series too? Aren't they basically the same chip? Microsoft's KB only lists Kaby and Ryzen as unsupported on the W7/8x page.

I feel this is more of an issue in the corporate world where companies have thousands of machines running W7 and new machines are reimaged on purchase with W7 to keep the whole company on the same version on Windows. As someone who has gone through a XP -> 7 and a 7-> 10 upgrade with many thousands of users, this isn't a trivial process.

Edit. More of an issue when large retails (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) move entirely over to the latest chips and companies who buy them are forced to upgrade to W10.
