Nevermind what I said earlier about async on 1st gen GCN, I mixed this in my head with Tomb Raider which was 2nd gen/1.1 and up only

    It is very interesting ... rx480 got 20% more fps and 4 ACE-s , HD 7950 got 30% with 8 ACE-s .

Did someone tested Hawai or Fiji GPUs , they all have 8 ACE ?

Another new API, another fail for Nvidia.

Amount of ACEs doesn't really dictate the performance that much.
Fiji and Polaris 10 both have 4 ACEs and 2 HWSs (apparently 2 ACEs can be configured as 1 ACE instead on GCN3, since initial Fiji diagrams had 8 ACEs and it was only later confirmed to be 2 HWS 4 ACE (at which point they also said that ACEs can be re-configured with microcode updates)

Does it look any different visually? OGL textures seem to have a unique look compared to DX, (Unless thats just the engine, RAGE, Wolfenstein etc looked similar) not seen any games in Vulkan yet

Ok, I've tested this in Single-player and Multiplayer.

In both instances it works fine, no crashes - Win7 Ultimate 64bit, latest .69 driver, GTX1070.

Honestly, I've been running this game maxed-out everything (inc both Nightmare options) at 1920x1200 and my verdict is: I can't tell the difference because performance was high under opengl already.

Someone with higher-resolution might be able to see a difference, I can't atm, although testing time was brief, 10mins of single-player and 4 matches of mp (won them all).

It runs great on both. No problems at all here.

Going by two posts in the DOOM topic could it be something with the 1000 series GPU's from Nvidia, perhaps either something with the game or the newest drivers?

    Performance increase, 980(ti)

Not sure, it just has a certain look about it, can't really explain, the texture popping was still there in DOOM as it was in RAGE, but not anywhere near as bad, but it's those textures I'm talking about

TBH, with the frame-rates I'm getting I don't think it'd make much difference. Doom runs awesome as it is.

    Heyyo,

To be fair to Nvidia though their OpenGL performance was always better than AMD's... a more fair comparison is if we saw benchmarks for the GTX 970 and R9 390.

There's an example of some screenshots I found on Reddit of a GTX 980 getting a hefty performance boost in Vulkan... but I can't post links since I don't have enough posts on Guru3D lol. :p

Tahiti/Pitcarin have 2 ACEs. Hawaii has 8 ACEs, Fiji/Polaris have 4 ACEs/2 HWS (which I have no idea what they do exactly, as there is no architectural review).

I don't believe there is any flexibility in that, just a mistaken first slide. Polaris has the same configuration of 4 ACEs/2 HWS.

EDIT: The only place showing Fiji as having only 4 ACEs is WCCFTECH. Anandtech shows it as having 8 ACEs and no HWS.

just tested it. i started a new game & simply backed into the same corner placing my xhair upon the same pixel of the doorway. 59fps under opengl, 83fps in vulkan. this is nothing short of incredible. im very impressed!

Just the overhead difference with your CPU must be tremendous.

The Hardware scheduler/Command processor changes should reduce CPU overhead we saw the 480 destroying the 390 in fallout 4 and we saw the Overwatch benches where teh 470 destroyed the 390.

It seems unoptimized garbage will really do great for the 400 series.

Fiji was originally shown wih 8 ACEs, but it was later updated to 4 ACEs 2 HWS. AMD's ACEs/HWSs can be re-programmed with microcode updates, and apparently you can make a HWS from 2 ACEs in GCN3. AMD showed the 4 ACE 2 HWS configuration first at HotChips conference IIRC.

HWS stands for HardWare Scheduler, it improves on the scheduling, load balancing etc further improving async compute performance over just ACEs

    edit:
Just to prove it's not some WCCFTech made up ****, here's their presentation
