Upgrading from a Nikon D40 and don't know if I should just get the D90 or save up a bit more and spring for a D300.

Anyone here have experience or knowledge on both that could offer an educated opinion on which I should buy? Thanks so much! :)

I actually have not. Is it in between the two? I don't mind spending the extra cash on the D300 if it is worth it but I do know that it is getting older as we speak.

I want something with good weather sealing and a much upgraded sensor from my D40. Have you personally used the D7000 before? If you have are you happy with it?

I have a D7000 and highly recommend it. Upgraded my old D300 for a D7000.

The D7000 is similar to D300, just slightly smaller, but better high iso performance, 4megapixel more, better metering and 1080p movie mode if your into movies.

I used the D300 at centre parcs for a couple of days as they were doing a lesson in portraits adnd wildlife. At the time i had a sony A200. The D300 was really the dogs do dahs.
When i upgraded from the sony all i could afford was the new D90 which i still have now and its a well nice peice of kit. Does what you want it to do and the HD movie is a bonus but i dont use it. Worth a look.

personally, I like the feel of the d300 a lot better, but the image quality of the d7000 is technically better.

    12vs16 MP - same thing
    both are 6 fps
both have great AF systems 51 vs 39 point, but essentially the same quality
both are mostly magnesium alloy body

the D7000 is about $1100 for the body whereas the D300s is still up close to $1600. you can get a used D300 (older version, no video, same image quality) for about $800 on ebay.

I'd go d300 personally, but it has about a stop worse performance at high ISO. I just like the feel of it better.

Buy an used d300 or a new D7000. Pretty sure you'll be happy with either of them.

I personnaly would be the d300

D300? isn't that a bit old, or are we guys talking about the D300s?

anyway, you can't go wrong with either the D7000 or D300s. i have the D7000 and very happy with it, especially the exceptional ISO performance.

Yeah, D7000 is much better at noise than the older D300/s.

It's almost as good as D700. Even at iso 1600, it's 90% clean.
