    Hi folks,

I had win10 from the free upgrade from win8 OEM cd I bought years ago.

I had win10 linked to my microsoft account.

Now when I boot up with my new mobo and cpu it tells me Win isn't activated.

I can check the microsoft account page and my old 'machine' are both showing.

I can remove the old one but I can't see an optiion to activate with new hardware.

I have googled but I'm going round in circles.

In some places it's said you can't move one of these old copies to new hardware config. In others it says if it's linked to your MS account it should be fine.

Anyone know what I can try?

    Thanks

what if you get Product ID from your Win10 by app(ShowKeyPlus for example((https://www.techspot.com/downloads/7129-showkeyplus.html) and give it to Microsoft Support.
you also can use your original key for your Windows(versions have to be the same(Pro-Pro,Home-Home and etc)) by typing in Command promt(run as administrator):
    slmgr.vbs /ipk #####-#####-#####-#####-##### (###### - your Key)

    That app is not compatible.

In think I need some major windows updates. The version I had on flash is ancient :(

I really should not have done all this on Sunday night with work the next day.

I can't install adobe products either, probably cos windows is too out of date.

It's not letting me update windows either.

It could just be the servers as I'm getting:

Unable to reach Windows activation servers

Sorry, this is so hard to look into while I'm trying to work at same time.

Apologies if I'm missing the obvious.

If I run winver I get a message that this projuct is licensed to my email.

So does that mean this 'new' machine's windows is good for me to use?

It's just a problem confirming with MS servers?

    Thanks

I'm happy to do that. I just need to get it working as soon as poss.

But I can't find that cheap. £60 for OEM on Amazon.

But Windows 10 update assistant that I came across on MS site seems to be happily updating it so far...

Maybe I should see how that goes. I'm still wondering if I'm actually running a activated Windows.

After installing win10 it even had my old desktop wallpaper and shortcuts etc.

And I can change themes which I don't think you can do on non genuine versions.

I think it was because windows needed updating.

    All sorted now though.

    Thanks

As far as I'm aware, OEM licenses are tied to a single motherboard.
If you upgrade you need a new license, unless its a replacement because the old died.
But you changed CPU as well so I doubt its valid.

Only retail license allow you to upgrade your mobo.

Yes, I think you're right there.

Once I got windows updated the setting page offered a troubleshooter which told me similar.

    Anyway, sorted now.

    Thanks

Surprised it took until this far down the page to see someone bring up the OEM license he mentioned in the first post.

But yeah.... that's why you can find OEM license keys for dirt cheap. They work, but if you plan on upgrading soon or frequently, it could add up.

How to reactivate installation after hardware change on Windows 10
To reactivate Windows 10 after a hardware change, use these steps:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Click on Update & Security.
    3. Click on Activation.
    4. Under the "Windows" section, click the Troubleshoot option.

    5. Click the I changed hardware on this device recently option.

      [IMG]Source: Windows Central

    6. Confirm your Microsoft account credentials (if applicable).
    7. Click the Sign-in button.

Quick note: If you're reactivating an existing installation that already had the Microsoft account configured, then you won't be prompted to sign in.

    8. Select the device that you're trying to reactivate.

      [IMG]Source: Windows Central

Quick tip: If the device isn't on the list, click the See other devices linked to your Microsoft account option, and select the device.

    9. Check the This is the device I'm using right now option.
    10. Click the Activate button.
After you complete the steps, Windows 10 will reactivate, and you start using the device and all the features available with the OS.

If you're no able to activate, you may need to acquire a new license to install and activate Windows 10 on the device. If this is the case, we recommend getting the Windows 10 Pro, which unlocks all the features available for the platform.
