I have no idea. Also it has other weird effects. Running the bench or stress test in CPU-Z it wouldn't budge off of 1200mhz and the test was running but with 1/4th the usual perf. I started up IBT just for giggles and it ran at 3.8ghz. Removing the update, which I just did, and setting Windows to pause update. Back to usual performance. This is moronic.

Edit: turns out the latest Version of CPU-Z has a bug. Ha ha... While the other issue is there with over clocks, after removing the update, CPU-z was still saying my CPU was at ~1900 mhz while it was at 4.5.

Intel inside, unfortunately, has a whole new meaning these days.

Very bad form indeed, lets hope they get it sorted out in short order.

Apparently the issue is an incompatibility with the BIOS microcode and the UEFI/OS microcode...inferring a BIOS update is needed.

Is it limited to specific maker (ASUS, etc) or a global issue?

I'm just laughing at one of the replies there about how this is normal for Spectre mitigation :p

I find this funny, as I stopped and disabled updating Windows 10 in early 2017, as well as disabling all the spy stuff using O&O Shutup.

1.5 years later, I'm still here ! My computer hasn't exploded, it's not swarming with viruses, it works as fast as it ever did, and having 2-3 months of uptime at a time.
Basically, it was rebooted about 10 times total in last two years.

So much fuss about these "vulnerabilities". They mean NOTHING AT ALL for the knowledgeable home user. (Yes, mitigation is important and critical for datacenters and virtualized environments where you don't know who runs what, but for single person just reading news, playing games and the occasional music... it means nothing)

    And now this ;-)
    Giggly giggity.

Note: I use an overclocked BW-e 6800K @ 4.1 Ghz all 6 cores (it can do 4.3 but gets too hot so keeping it down and low voltage)

The fix necessary will require the bios to have latest MCU.

Not a big deal if you want to do it yourself.

Neato, thanks for promoting yourself...I guess. My 6850K runs all day weeks months on end at 4.5ghz...but bummer you got a dud.

It surely is unpleasant. But it is not like there are many people with Broadwell-E who bought system overclocked from shop and have no clue how to OC or deal with patch.
I think most who have it OCed did it themselves and are capable to look on internet moment they face this problem.

If it was wide spread issue affecting regular desktop CPUs, it would be problem as there many shops which sell pre-overclocked chips in complete systems and users are not exactly technically equipped.
Many would not even realize that it is CPU misbehaving.

This just raises eyebrow or two.

Indeed, was pretty pissed for that. But hey, silicon lottery is silicon lottery.
It's just about time to change it anyway, so doesn't matter much today.

Not planning to turn this thread into an AMD vs Intel thing, but to be honest Intel kinda deserves to be ditched... for now. Just too many problems and f*ckups lately... (And yes, it must be THEIR fault, not Microsofts, as Intel is providing those microcode updates to Microsoft)

The golden age of Intel CPU's that overclocked like mad and roflstomped anything in their path are over.

This latest news you provided is just one extra reason to consider the competition ( not that there aren't already enough of them )

This update isn't just affecting Intel systems. MS is also pushing it out to AMD based systems. Apparently, they screwed up. I have this microcode update installed and I'm running a Ryzen 5 1600....

Yes, you probably have the .dll file but, it won't affect your system.
