ok, so im looking at upgrading my pc and so far, this is what im looking at getting, i do a lot of video editing, 3d editing and image editing so yea, dont question the quad core erm, i have a budget of £800 which is low but it can get me somewhere ^_^ ok, this is the lineup so far Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard Kingston HyperX 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Kit BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) now so far that comes to about £730 but i might need a new power supply. The motherboard is pretty weak but im thinking of keeping my old 6800gt in for a while (agp hence the odd motherboard) and not getting a new gfx card till later, instead get 4gb of ram and a couple of new harddrives which will be more useful for me Oh yea, i currently have a tagan 480w powersupply, im gonna assume that with this lot and 3harddrives, an xfi and cooling, im going to need closer to a 600w one, just wondering if im right in thinking that? just wondering what you think of this setup and also if anyone knows if the motherboard is actually any good, aswell as if its easily overclockable
imo you should grab an nforce6 of some kind for your core2. if sli is not important check out the 650i ultra's from evga and bfg, although the 680i sli boards are packed with more goodies than just extra pci-e slots for sli. and id grab a solid 700-750w power supply if you have multiple drives, a quad core and an 8800 thats overclocked, and you always want a tad of headroom for anything you may add or clock up also. something like pc power and cooling silencer's,silverstone decathlon's or enermax infiniti's.
thanks for the advice. Atm the reason i am getting the motherboard i chose is because its unlikely that im getting a new graphics card now so i need one which supports quad core and also agp/pci express at the same time, giving me the option to upgrade at a later date and till then, use my good ol aging 6800gt ^_^ I probably wont overclock for a while so according to the site you linked me, on stock speeds my overall system would use about 400w so i have 80w of headroom which isnt much but is enough, i can get a new psu along with a new gfx card at a later date but thanks for the advice on that, its something i will bear in mind in the future.

theres a bang for the buck that would be hard to ignore. and well within the budget stated by thread starter. i would honestly go with the selections nexus made. gtx/xeon > gts/core2
Don't count on that board for pcie graphics its runs at 4x not 16x so your pcie card would be slow Save and get a cheap agp board then buy a decent 16x pcie board later dont forget pcie 2 will be out sooner rather than later 4x agp too even though it states 8x agp 16x pcie

Hold off on the extra 2 gb of ram You need 64 bit os if you go that direction too... The q6600 is better but a faction plus 100 pound more
I have a 8800gtx and the hd2900 seems to hold its own with it the ati is half the price and alot better than a 6800gt I had a 3000+ xp nf2 board 6800 2 gb ram prior to upgrade, i was going to do what you did but glad i didn't. I did save a bit more though, but i can't see why you give up the chance to go for a dx10 card Think of it this way would you prefer to buy 4 gb of ram and then have to buy a new psu, mobo, gpu later = alot of money or would you prefer to buy what i laid out and buy later which costs a mere 100(compared to another 500+)
The new teradrives are coming out soon too so drives are going to get cheaper another reason to hold of In the end its all up to you though
Q6600 $266 in July If you wait till july for your buy You could get the HD2900xt and q6600 at a good price its just 2 months away, well worth the wait And you could save another 100 pound
