Hello gurus, as my house renovations are almost done I am willing to change my current desk who got battered and damaged. So, basically I want a simple desk for my computer and I want also to do my homeworks on it. Budget around 150 euro. What should I look for? Ikea, Jysk, custom made, DIY desk?
@anticupidon DIY desk if you ask me, then you can get it exactly how you want it. I wanted a new desk that was wide enough this time (I'm 190cm) so that I could stretch my legs but it's impossible to find such a desk for a normal price (that is white). There are gaming desks but they are very expensive and black with weird gaming colors. Next time I'll just buy a large piece of wood (150x120cm), paint it white and attach legs (can be bought at IKEA) and also a cable management thing (also at IKEA). Should be pretty cheap.
I have a corner shaped table at home and i'm sitting right in the middle of the corner which is just perfect. That way my hands have more tablespace to rest on and i can put stuff like food & drinks to the left and right side within easy reach. https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07Q2R9BQV?tag=duc03-21&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1
DIY for sure. I have mine fitted to the wall so there's zero wobble and it looks better as well. If you do this just remember to have a cut away in the panel at the back for your power/usb/vga cables.
I would choose desk more simple as possible. For cable management go for simple cable ties or strips and some adhesive cable clips...
Whatever you wind up purchasing, DON'T buy anything called a "computer desk". You will regret it. For my money, a standard sized 3-drawer office desk is the best. I'd recommend something with at least a 2' (61cm) depth. For example, I can have my monitor, a keyboard, and a 12" plate of spaghetti in front of me with room to spare for a printer and a huge joystick, plus all the usual accessories. Yes, I take meals at my PC. You could probably pick up a nice used one somewhere for that kind of money. If you don't need the drawers for storage or filing, a decent-sized office table could also work, if it's the right height for comfort. You have to think about your computer chair and how high or low it can adjust. I noticed some recommendations for corner L-shaped computer desks but if they don't have a good depth you will grow to hate them with a passion.
Go for a normal L-shaped office table or whatever they call it. Pretty comfortable to game in the middle. This is mine:
Thanks for all replies. My designated room is relatively small. I should take some measurements and see what estate I should allocate to the desk.
Go to store and check what desks they have available. 80cm depth and as rigid/solid as possible. The more it weights the better. Adjust your chair so your liking and then measure how high the desk should be. Measure how wide desk fits.
Wouldn't miss that. Yeah, right. Thank you sir, but I like my room simple and as Spartan as modern society allows it. The heck, it's my room.
i like my tech but i dont want my home looking like a SAC war room with WOPR sitting right in the middle of it
I would advise to at least get the Philips Hue starter pack and the sync app for the desktop. That way the lights behind the screen are always as bright as the picture on screen and i found this is far better for the eyes. Had a normal led strip there at first but it's either too bright for night action or too dark for day action. Big plus: explosions on screen make a big impression!
DIY is always my preferred option, if you have the skills to actually do it and some money to spend on good wood / steel / whatever your desk should be. Otherwise I prefer IKEA mostly. Their furniture is very durable if you dont take ones from the "lower shelfes". Buy cheap buy twice. But one notch above "lowest shelf" typically is pretty durable. For myself, I got this one: https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/malm-schreibtisch-schwarzbraun-00214157/ (I got it as "2nd hand" for 50 bucks) If you need more space, probably this one: https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/linnmon-alex-tisch-weiss-s59932698/ (2 meters wide!) (I dont like white furniture, but cannot find it in black or brown) The MALM desk is made of pretty thick wooden parts, but not as durable as you may expect. Dont get me wrong, it is still solid and all, but one time I was so angry I slammed the upper drawer, which resulted in the front part "flying away". I got it fixed with glue, no issue, but I would have expected the desk would not take this much damage.
Bought a standing desk and it have saved my posture and back. The hours can be long in front of the pc, so whenever i feel tired i just hit a button and up i stand for a few minutes to a few hours and my back is thanking me every time i do this. (Remember to buy a good fatigue mat).
