Hi all, I'm a bit lost here. Yesterday I recieved my new ordered parts: - G.Skill Aegis F4-3000C16D-16GISB - DDR4 - Gigabyte B360M D3H - Phanteks Eclipse P300 Tempered Glass - XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX 8GB - CORSAIR RMx Series RM550x - Intel Core i5 8400 And I installed already owned: - Samsung spinpoint 1 TB HDD - Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD After assembling the entire build I connected the PSU, turned the switch on and pressed the power button. For a very brief moment, less than a second, I saw the led on the power switch lighting up. After this nothing happened. I turned off the PSU and did the following checks: - Checked the little pins underneath the mobo - 8 pin connector for cpu is correctly connected - cpu fan is correctly connected - 24 pin connector for main power is correctly connected - ram sticks are correctly in their sockets - booting while using, only 1, 1 ram stick or the other does not make a difference - the gpu is correclty in the socket(x16) I tried the PSU on an old system, connected the cpu and main power pins and turned it on. This caused the fans to start spinning. Not sure if it means that te PSU is ok, but it does something. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance! Kind regards, Kevin
Hello Kevin, the classic procedure would be to unhook everything besides a single RAM stick and the CPU, then try to start the mainboard, if it lights up, put the GPU in and see if it posts, etc. If it doesn't boot up right away there's something more grave wrong with the system. Then you need to check every single component.
Hi, thanks for the reply! I tried this, from only the cpu, and cpu fan connected, to one ram, two ram and gpu. Does the minor moment of led lighting up on the very first boot indicate anything?
Yes, but sadly not much (your power cables seem to be okay). Do you have the chance to try your system with a completely different PSU then? Is this an older PSU or a new one, which brand and wattage? Recently I built a new system with a new PSU, same issues, turns out with another PSU the system ran fine, made me RMA the new PSU (still don't know how that turned out though, in the process).
Thanks again. I tried to connect a working PSU, from an older build, just connected the cpu and main power pins. Nothing happened. This is an older Corsair 450W. I tested my new PSU on this old build, this did make the fans spin up. It's a brand new CORSAIR RMx Series RM550x. 550W.
So if the PSU's not the problem, it has to be with either the CPU or the mainboard. I guess, since it's a new build, you have little to no chance to test components in other PCs, e.g. the i5 8400 in another PC?
To me it sounds like it is shorting out, build the pc with bare essentials OUT of the case and see if get any joy
@fantaskarsef I should buy some cooling paste, I might be able to place the cpu in a new system, might try that as a last resort. @Passus I'll see if I can get it to work out of the pc when I get home. Any idea what could be the cause of a shorting? To be honest I don't know how I can power it up without the case switch, any suggestions?
This. A paper clip also is able to short the two right pins, see your mainboard's manual for their usual location to do that. Works fine, no danger there.

Could be caused by the screws or the screw standoffs, i have had cases in the past that needed re drilling as the screws were bending the motherboards as for starting the machine just run a screwdriver over the pins and it'll hopefully power on
Hi all, just an update: the part supplier offered to assemble the pc for me, check all the parts and if needed replace any faulty parts. If they find any faulty parts or building errors from my side they will update. I will still let you all know what was the cause and solution of my problem(s) but it will take some time!
Even though it's a new build it can never hurt clearing the CMOS. You can do it like the manual says or just pop out the mainboard battery for about 10 seconds.
