It will be interesting to see the difference in performance increase with SAM between PCIE3 and PCIE4.

Oh wow, a BIOS for my Prime X470-Pro! I didn't actually expect that. Too bad I can't buy a CPU to use with it :p

Hopefully they will release a bios with the new AGESA but without the SAM support so we get the benefits of the new functions on the 400 series chipsets. The X450 and X470 bios with 5000 series support will most likely remove support for older chips so it will be a judgement call on whether to flash or not depending on the chip you plan to use.

Well, it would make keeping the old cpu "just in-case" totally pointless. I'm actually not keen on these one-way bios upgrades, even though I understand why they do it.

Oof no reverse sounds bad, imagine if your car had no reverse. Kinda sounds like a disaster waiting for you if things mess up.

I always like how AMD is bs the ignorant costumers - take something that exist in the PCIe spec for years and brand it under a cool name... "Smart Access Memory" lol....

Apple seems to have done allright with that exact policy even managed to patent a rectangle ''''@@ sake, if it existed for years than kudos to AMD for actually thinking out the box and doing something with it

"Support for SAM is potentially a big one, but by being limited to Ryzen 5000 CPUs on a 500 series motherboard, its impact is less significant. Nvidia claims they're working on getting this working with Ampere GPUs, too, and for all platforms, which is a good thing as it will force AMD to open up support to all users.

On that note, PCIe 4.0 doesn’t appear to be required either. We ran a few tests in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla while forcing PCIe 3.0 on our X570 test system and didn’t see a decline in performance when compared to PCIe 4.0, so that’s interesting. The testing was limited though, and it's something we’ll need to explore further with a little more time up our sleeves." - Techspot

I am like a kid in a candy store, with all the bell and whistle in the x470 BIOS, Christmas came early [IMG]

This sweetens the deal because we can use a good X470 MB for a better price than overpriced B550 or X570 now!

I wonder how this will work on my X99 when Nvidia supports the feature. Besides "Above 4G Decoding" I'm not really sure what else would need to be enabled in BIOS.

My system refuses to boot when I enable "Above 4G decoding" in bios. The Windows screen shows up and then just reboots again and again... No on any 5000-series agesa yet tho!

By the way, linux managed to boot just fine. I also set up a new windows to go instance, which experiences similar issues with 4G enabled during setup: Network card, secondary NVMe and i dunno what else refused to work. they were detected, but even after installing drivers. Once I installed the amd drivers 20.11.2 , it failed to boot again. not sure whats up with that and who is to blame for this...

There should always be quad test in such situation:
    Code:
             \ SAM OFF | SAM ON |
    PCIe 3.0 | | |
    -------------------+--------+
    PCIE 4.0 | | |
    -----------------------------
As it may show that enabling SAM on PCIe 3.0 results in matching PCIe 4.0 with SAM OFF. (Or being better.)

I think I read somewhere that it only works with Windows 10 installed in UEFI mode.

Great, no need to wait until January.
Anyway, gotta change the 3800X to a 5000 series cpu first haha :)

Yeah, that is true, but that is already the case for me... The issue must be something else

Your devices require vendor driver updates, or simply will never run with 4G decoding properly, the asmedia chipset probably craps itself.
