I always used Clamp during the last 8 years (since I switched back from AMD to nVidia) with forced 16x AF and High Quality settings. I just "unclamped" it now. Thanks for info. I shall see if it does anything visible (I doubt I will notice anything, especially without comparing screenshots, but...).

clamp doesn't do anything to any dx games since fermi.

This is not true, I use it on many games. (clamp and -3) It just doesn't work on DX12 and vulkan.

Negative mipmap bias works for DX12 even, like in CP2077 and Dead Space Remake

DF talks about applying mipmap bias with DLSS in their Dead Space Remake PC video

Really ?! Maybe it is game dependant, i have tried it on some DX12, i think 2 , and didn't see a difference. I haven't tried on cp2077, maybe i will reinstall it again, dead space i do not own yet.

    Clamp does nothing at all.
    Nvidia themselves has said so.

Clamp/Allow was implemented for D3D titles that defaulted to setting a negative lod and had Tri/Bilinear only filtering, though there were a few really well known games that did so even with built in AF in the late stages of D3D9.

Clamp would round anything lower than 0 back to 0 when application AF or Driver AF was in use preventing extreme mip crawling on adjacent/diagonal surfaces..

auto-lod implementation replaces the clamp/allow system and is fine-tunable by the user with Profile Inspector via the MIP Bias DX and OpenGL controls, with opengl also being applicable to Vulkan in some unique cases,

this was actually originally a driver bug that was provoked by forcing TrAA to Super, turned into an actual feature when reported to NV.

So why did you say it doesn't work ?

I will clarify my post, because I was intending to be replying to janos who was using the clamp setting.

If you set AF to 16x it automaticly changes it to clamp too

It does indeed, unless something changed it may still work on opengl, but i cannot confirm that with Doom or opengl based emulation since they have moved to using Shaders for the AF masks.

It definitely doesn't play a part in in DX titles anymore though.

as indicated in the studio-397 url, on DX the lod clamp setting isn't required for any usage of the mip bias settings for DX, no matter if you were using a driver that still required the sparse grid hack, or the guzz patch.

OK, I'm home now, and I took 2 screenshots of Dark Souls 3.
one with +3 and one with -3. Can you guess which is which ?

^ Good gosh almighty, now I've got a headache. That 2nd screenshot looks like dog crap.

Now what setting did you change to have such an effect and where is it located?

    No spoilers please LOL

    -3 is sharper
    +3 is worse quality

Well, as expected, it shows exactly that the clamp option does nothing. It is one of the best examples of ancient cruft in Nvidia's settings panel that should have been resolved a decade (or two...) ago. Or, better, the option should have been revived to work with modern APIs.

I'm interested why you say it does nothing. I don't really know the difference between allow and clamp btw, so I'm not really sure what to look for.

If it worked, a setting of -3 or +3 would both look like 0.
That it sets itself to clamp when changing some other texture filtering settings really does nothing but cause confusion. Really baffling why nobody who is in charge of the control panel cares about such things.

Oh , i thought clamp would keep it looking like -3 or +3 not 0.

Yeah i really wish they would re-do the whole control panel, and make it with a more modern look while they are at it.
