need help in deciding GTX 970 OR AMD R9 390(or maybe r9 380)

First of all please no fanboys

Hey, i'm planning to upgrade from my gtx 680 to a new gpu but now i am wondering if should i buy a gtx 970 or a R9 390. the 390 is still shipping so i don't know how much it will be in my country ((but the prices are related to European prices)).
i'm planning to play 1080p and for some games upscaling 1440p.
and another question, i guess the R9 390 will be more future proof ??? (4gb vs 8gb)

i have a 700W PSU so no problem there--i have an I7 3770k.

I have seen their hardware being better than NVIDIA's overtime, and since you are going for single GPU the differences in driver support are non existent.

For multi-GPU's yes.

As the 390/x are just rebrands with extra VRAM (possibly slightly overclocked) the 970 and 390x should be trading blows as now with the 290x. The 970 runs cheaper and cooler too but has less efficient VRAM and doesn't have asynchronous shaders like AMD for DX12/Mantle/Vulkan.

Alright, i'd say go with a gtx 970 for the sake of the oc headroom and the performance gain. The price is similar and perhaps even cheaper than the r9 390. In terms of vram, both will usually deliver poor performance before they run out of vram if the game is that much demanding. Gameworks is also another thing you want to think about. Last but not least, the dx 11 cpu overhead. If you insist on buying an amd card, go with a used r9 290 pcs+ or vapor-x, you should find plenty of them on ebay, and oc it. But if you really want to get an r9 390, the powercolor pcs+ is by far the coolest card, so you will get the most oc out of your card and lowest temp among the hawaii series.

I have an r9 290 as you can see, and those benchmark don't always reflect the numbers you will be getting. So before you make your decision, go watch some rgoc, digital foundry comparison videos on youtube, they usually show the benchmark segment and the results of each card side by side. There is also a guy who oc'd his r9 290 to 1200/1600 with water cooling and compared his performance to an oc'd gtx 970. You won't find any perhaps with an r9 390, but a vapor-x r9 290 is exactly the same as an r9 390. While the 8 gb vram sounds great, you won't really need unless you plan to cf and play at 4k.

 

970 hands down.. OR.. pay a tad more and go for FURY!

Dont get me wrong I LOVE ATI but the 290/390* are SPACE HEATERS! Yes some makers keep it cool yet.. the TEMPS are the same. Its a hot card.

 

Uhm the Sapphire 290X tri-X runs cooler than most 970's not sure exact temps on the 390 but it should be better

 

I woul get the MSI 390. It clocks are same as non aib 390x, so you get a 390x for 100$ less and performance is close to gtx 980 and you get 8gb vram for 250$ less !

 

I would get the cheapest 290x vs 970 something like msi gaming, asus direct cu2 or sapphire tri-x. Clock it to 1100/6000 = enjoy your bit more power hungry 390x ;o (since it seems some of the 390x don't use much power at all vs 290x while some use the same)

 

I have an Nitro R9 380 from sapphire works great silent even with GTA V downside is that it won't install under windows 10 not even with modded drivers.

On windows 8.1 works great !

 

For your information, comparing a high-end cooling solution to an average one is not a feasible method of obtaining credibility. And you're wrong anyway. My phantom stock profile is cooler than a 290x tri-x and it doesn't have phenomenal cooling since the in-built profile was created with quietness in mind.
If I manually ramp it up however it's another story.

So if we were to take a high-end cooling solution, the 970 G1 gaming is more than 10 degrees cooler than the 290x tri-x while also being slightly quieter.

Check your facts before spreading misinformation. The 290x is a very hot card.

The 290 is a hot card yes but fixable with a good 3rd party cooler.. Vapor X, Tri-X should be good.

 

go with 390x but dude remember your case must be good enough to dispose heat.. for 1080p 390x will be a bit overkill though.. but 390x is a way better choice then 970 ( becaz of the vram ).. but at 1080p and 1440p i dont think u can see noticeable difference with the 970..

nvidia has better driver support ( amd driver support in recent days are not bad ). but if u r not using crossfire setup i dont think it effects gaming that much.. now its completely upto u.. if it was me i wud have gone with the 390x..


edit- do not even think of 380....

 

390x is fighting with 980 with 1200mhz it gets close to a 980 at 1350 boost clocks (while 980 goes to 1500+ putting some 0-10% between the cards). While 970 clocked to "max" gets close to 390x when it is at around 1100mhz which is pre clocked speeds like msi gaming 390x.

290x gets to 1100-1150 max really and it will be as fast as 390x at the same clocks.


Now 980 and 970 achieve this without using as much power so nvidia wins. But in terms of raw performance AMD isn't any worse really.
So 290x would be greatest choice. 290 and 390 are the competitors for 970.

I agree.

A good deal on a MSI 290X gaming 8 GB you can flash with the 390X bios can save a lot of $$$ compared to buy the MSI 390X gaming 8 GB.

The performance will be EQUAL for less money. .)
