The 390 feels like a better choice in the long run, you'll probably get better performance from the 970 right meow.

R9 390 pcs+, it has a back plate and costs less. But between the two the r9 390 nitro, and OC it.

The Sapphire 390 would be better in the long run as PrMinisterGR said. Modded skyrim uses a lot of vram so the 390 would be better for that game

Witcher 3 is faster on the 970

Thanks for the quick reply guys. So 390 will be my upgrade. Only the nitro version from sapphire is available here.

Once you get it, please do some benchmarking for firestrike, unigine heaven, and valley. I'd be interested to see your results.

390 should beat the 970 in pretty much everything but witcher 3 even when both are oc'd well according to this one youtube video at least :D He has good graphs at the end of the video with 970 @ 1448 and the 390 @ 1200.

(even more then that I like the 290x in that list xD)

See what is bugging me is the firestrike graphics score, how did he get 14000? And the fc 4, how did he get 80 fps with 2xmsaa and hbao+?

I have both Ga 970 g1 and Msi 390. So far for ME there is nothing that runs better with 8gb ram vs 4gb. If your running something higher then 1080 which I do .. 8gb is great and newer games.. you never know.

Allot of games the 390 is faster yet you will not notice the difference between this and the 970. For me.. I notice the heat more with 390. Well in testing they will show about the same temp..70c around there yet man the R9 390 that SHOWS the same temp really puts out heat. Could be just me lol.

You cant go wrong.. I LOVE Nvidia (3D) but the 390.. awesome card. The only problem I have had is HACKINTOSH lol. I got it to work.. but like the 290.. its like its running at 1/2 speed. NO drivers from AMD. Now Nvidia.. they put out drivers all the time. Like Diablo III NV gets 190fps. AMD 390 75. AMD should be better then NV but.. it works..

Thats a graphics score, not overall score. As you can see HH got 13,600 with 1150Mhz so 14,000 seems about right for 1200Mhz.

But yeah, 390 over 970 anyway.

I know that that is the graphics score only, and that is still bugging me. I can't get passed 13000 for graphics with 1200/1600. I don't if it has something to do with the version of 3DMark since i only got the demo version, or maybe they used win 10 while benching since it gives a few 100 points boost. I can't figure it out. I am open for suggestions. Is my cpu affecting the graphics score as well, or is it my mobo and pci express lane? It's pci e 3x16 btw. Even pci e 2x16 isn't a bottlenick anyways.

Want to be a guinea pig? I'm not sure if anyone actually tested this out! Firstly, I guess running 15.8 would be good if not already :).

In the catalyst install folders under Packages\Drivers\amdkmpfd\WB64A assuming you are Windows 10 or Windows 8. The reason not to go WT64A in Catalyst 15.8 only is because it appears the driver has been updated for Windows 8, but the folder is still the same for Windows 10 and the drivers are otherwise the same.

Anyways, right hand click on the .inf file, click install, and restart. The AMD PCI filter driver works on Intel due to it being an industry standard device. Computers run fine with this installed. However, it is not known whether it actually affects benchmarks or not (as nobody has really tested it...).

i understand that modded skyrim uses a lot of vram in some cases, but in this video here 2.4gb vram used most ? and the ini file had 3.5gb as vram and in that video is lots of mods like highly dense grass and high res shadows and such https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip0XK5UZ0cY

but i do agree get 390 over 970 for future proof with 8gb vram

I did a system restore point, and I did what you said. I restarted, and yes my PCI bus now has an AMD driver. There is no difference at all in anything. 3DMark gives the same scors in under both Firestrike and the API test, up to the point almost.

Well i guess you saved me the trouble then of doing it. I really still can't justify the almost 1000 points over my graphics score. At my current clocks with the 15.8 i get ~12850 points, while HH got around 13600. So does it really make a different having the advanced version of 3dmark? Does the cpu also affect the graphics score?
