    Hi,

I have an old reliable system with these specs.

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66 GHz,
    ASUS P5QL PRO,
    DDR2 Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5 8GB in 4 sticks
VGA Card Model : sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5
MONITOR: SAMSUNG S24A350H (24inch LED FLAT PANEL)

    Operating System : Windows 7 64bit
    Operating System : Mavericks

Recently after a rainy season my GPU started giving me trouble and slowly it is out of order. during problem screen becomes divided in half in two columns. right side screen spans over the left side column. I tried tests and checked isolated RAM, reduced load in PSU, etc. also exact same problem comes in Mavericks on same build. So it all boils down to faulty GPU. served me very well last three years. Warranty is over already. Time to change.

My usage is medium gaming, HQ pics (images) browsing and minor editing works, browse through large collection and minor editing. Playing movies on HD and other formats, minor video editing. less frequent medium level gaming on 1080p 1440p but may upgrade to 4k monitor next year for similar usage.

Now I want to ask should I go AMD or nVIDIA and which specific models I can consider ?

I do have mavericks too on same rig and want a graphic card with less pain on hackintosh installing. solid performance and reliable with future hackintosh experimenting.

My budget is medium to high but not towards as high as top of the line GTX 980 or R9 290

please also mention a Gr. card would give same performance when manufactured by ASUS or GIGABYTE. ( these two are popular in my area for AMD and nVIDIA both)

I am aware GPU selection in an open debate. but based on factors above please help me choose one.
after my existing GPU faulty, my build is not operational and I don't have time to spend weeks in research.

I learned that Apple utilizing nvidia past years and now turning back to AMD.
    suggestions are awaited.

    Thanks

Well your cpu and hardware are all fairly old and due for an upgrade so any high end gpu is a waste, but you should be able to go on ebay and find yourself GTX760 and that will works with your hackintosh

Yes my hardware is old. Actually my plans were to upgrade hardware first then GPU but GPU gone bad suddenly. I have to replace GPU first but I will replace my hardware too.

I need a GPU in medium budget that would also serve me with me future hardware upgrade.

    I will look into GTX760,

is there a difference if it is made by ASUS or by GIGABYTE I mean manufacturer would make any difference in performance?

Also can you suggest nVIDIA or ATI?
    for windows/hackintosh/pics/video editing, medium gaming.

you know it everbody wants bang for the bucks he spent.

    Thanks again
