Hey mates, should I be concerned that my Sapphire Radeon 6870 reaches 85-88 degrees while in-game ?

I think the ventilation inside the case is just fine because once I exit the game, in goes back to about 40 in about 10 seconds.

There's no lag while in game, so the heat isn't slowing her down...
    Btw, no OC whatsoever.

    Tnx

If it's a stock cooler it might get that high. Have you got a fan blowing cold air near the GFX card's fan cos that helps. Make sure it ain't dusty inside it either.

So I should worry after all :)) Yeah, it only has its' stock cooler, a single fan, the case ain't dusty, I just bought the whole config, I'll try and find an additional cooler, like you said.

Should I get a standard additional fan for the case or go for a gpu cooler, the fan mounted under the gpu, like a pci board, in one of the slots ?

As long as it stays below 100 C, it's fine.

For a stock cooler, you're fine. Might wanna re-apply thermal paste and/or buy an aftermarket cooler once the warranty expires though.

Nothing to worry about at all, my 4870 hits those kind of temps when I have it running at stock speed (highest I've seen is around 87c), get around 41-45c idle (depending on the weather)

I have the sapphire 6870 and mine gets up to 80-85 during gaming and on a hot day, nothing to worry about imo.

okeeey, that's a load off my chest, thought mine had a cooling flaw, I'm still gonna' try installing some extra ventilation in the case, my feet are wet after 2 hrs of gaming :))

    tx all for the info.

My 6950 never gets over 60c, and that's with it oc'd to 880/1350. It has custom cooler though...

My 8800GTX hits 80c when gaming.

I guess that's the norm with stock gpu coolers. Just use something like afterburner and put in a custom fan profile to cool the thing down.

Yeah it does look correct for summer. My 6970 was hitting ~85C° on hot days with stock cooler and stock frequencies. Now with an Accelero Xtreme and a custom VRM cooler, nothing will go past an absolute max of 58C° @ 1035/1556.
HD6k runs hotter than HD5k BTW.
    You should be fine.

I replaced the thermal paste on my Radeon 5870 which was about the same temperatures as yours with Prolimatech PK-1 paste and my temperatures dropped by 10° C idle and load.

    Great for Canada winters :)

85c sounds ok. My ambient temp is around 26c in my room and with the fan at 45% my temp is 75c playing BC2. I was tempted to get another video card with quieter fans and cooler temps but I can wait for the HD 7000 or GTX 600 series.

Stock coolers are like that as others have said. My oc'ed 580s too were nearing 90c in july/august, and they had stock coolers as well.

I for one made an improvement last night, no extra fan but I did rip out the extra metal plates on the back of the case which cover additional empty pci card slots under the gpu to create a path for the hot air coming out of it. I don't want to remove the case cover because my cats are often too curious.

I noticed a decrease in temperature of about 7 degrees, so now, it goes up to about 75 in crysis 2.
