My little HD 5770 oc guide

    Hi everyone!

    After getting some pm's about how I did the overclock on my card I decided to do a little guide.

    The card I have is the SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 which doesn't have voltage control!

    I can not guarantee my clocks will work on your card, it's dependent on a lot of extra factors like cooling, case airflow and a few other ones.

    One extra remark is that Sapphire decided to put Hynix memory on this card which has a default 5600Mhz rating. So upping the memory to 1400Mhz isn't even overclocking it. There is a tradeoff however, the higher you clock the mempry the less overhead on voltage you get, so when you clock the memory to 1440Mhz you can't reach 1020Mhz on the Gpu because you're out of the actual juice you need in total.

    I use CCC for overclocking by the way because i like to keep the powerplay settings.

    The first thing I did was change the range I could choose from in CCC to get me wherever I wanted to go.

    [IMG]

    I used Radeon Bios Editor for this from Techpowerup.

    The first step is to open Gpu-z and save your current Bios;

    [IMG]

    Click on that icon and save your bios somewhere. I always save it on the desktop at first. Be sure to copy this file in two locations by the way! When you follow this procedure you will edit this file so the other copy will be the backup for your original bios.

    Start up Radeon Bios Editor and open the bios file. Select the fourth tab after that;

    [IMG]

    You see the steps above. After saving your bios get Winflash to flash the card or any other util you like.

    You now have a wider range of gpu and memory clocks to choose from.

    So, what about the actual overclock?

    I reached the overclock not only by putting in the values but I also had to raise the voltage on my northbridge, sometimes called MCH, in the bios of the motherboard. I have it set at 1.4 volts and it's stable now. Get's a bit hot but I will reapply TIM whenever I get time to do it.

    Oh, by the way here's a screenshot of vantage with my q8300;

    [IMG]

    The drivers I'm using are the 10.x drivers from the ati driver forum. These one's give me the best overclocking results. I guess vpu recover is off but I'm not sure about that.

    Well I guess there will be some questions so ask away and I try to help in any way I can!

    Nope, no voltage control :(

    You can't even change the voltages from within RBE.

    Get your hands dirty with some hardmods

    im looking for one right now :D

    Well, very useful information there.

    I read that you get the most "juice" by OCing the GPU rather than the memory on this card. Did you did some sort of test comparing benefits from memory OC against GPU OC? How much performance you gained? 15%? More?

    Stock cooler? (well, im refering if you use that heat pipe shappire cooler) Max temps in FurMark or something like that?

    Let me know when you find one :)

    @ The Chubu I redid the TIM on the cooler, which is the stock Sapphire cooler. I even lapped it with 600 sandpaper. The copper cooler plate is very bad. Max temps in furmark is about 60 - 63 C now with Furmark and cooler on 100%.

    Overclocking the Gpu get's you much more benefits then overclocking the memory. However there is a point that you need to overclock the memory from the stock 1200Mhz or the gpu overclock will not do you any benefits.

    Try a 980 overclock and a 1000 one on the gpu with memory first set on 1380 and on the second run on 1400. It will make a difference in Vantage.

    The total gain from the overclock is about 3000 points on the gpu from a starting point of ~ 8000 points.

    The translation to real life gaming is this:

    - MW2: no gains in playabillity, allready great on stock clocks
    - RE5: no gains in playabillity, allready great on stock clocks
    - Fallout 3: no gains in playabillity, allready great on stock clocks
    - Metro 2033: framerates bad on stock, stay bad on an overclock

    I play 1920 x 1200.

    what setting do you use on mw2 cause I tried extra with my card and I got random lag with AAx2 and I was think about over clocking my card but still thinking about it.On AvP I play on normal with AAx2 and tessellation and advance shadows on and I seen my fps dip to about 29 on the last boss fight for the predator.

    Hi Jonnyboy! When I do a mild overclock I get a minimum framerate of 64 in the opening scene just after the target practice. When I walk pas the guys that are playing basketball and look at the truck outside the fence I get 140+. The settings are all on their maximum, even texture quality is on 'extra'. Resolution is 1920 x 1200 :)

    Well something completly different, I wanted to clock it higher last night and got to 1040 / 1420 last night. I could run vantage with these settings:

    [IMG]

    I could run Furmark for about 6 seconds and then my machine locked up :( It could be my NB temp.

    Furmark over stresses ATI cards tbh

    also

    no luck on a vmod so far.

    Hmm too bad. I'm still very pleased with the card as it is but a little extra won't hurt a bit! I'm allready looking into another computer which I will give myself as a present after tax returns lol.

    I will be having 5850's cf then or maybe a single 5970. But that won't be for at least two months.

    Great guide, but I found it alot easier to just download and flash the ASUS BIOS

    I was under the distinct impression that the Asus bios didn't turn on voltage control on this particular card SAPPHIRE 100283-3L. Oh wait, you mean the added range for overclocking I guess lol. Yes indeed that's easier, but this is more fun, to me at least :)

    Oh yea, its deffinately more fun lol, anyway I have learned about the BIOS tweak tool now thanks

    But I used the ASUS BIOS and MSI Afterburner for voltage control :)

    On the same card?!?

    Yea, I have the Sapphire 5770, flashed with the ASUS Unlocked BIOS, and I use MSI Afterburner to control Clock speed and voltage

    Would I be able to get up to 900Mhz on stock voltages,and my stock core clock is 875 and memory is at 1200.

    I was hitting 1000mhz on the GPU with a 1.227vcore

    but I updated my Motherboard BIOS and now 950Mhz is the only stable speed I can hit

    in those ss did you have overdrive enabled with MSI afterburner or were you just trying to show which program gives a better over clocking result?

    Atlas Guest

    Well if you have voltage control use msi afterburner. Otherwise use whatever you want :)

    I just flashed my bios to Asus, tricky little flash;

    Episode one, doing it the wrong way:

    - Flash you bios to another card vendor (Sapphire --> Asus)
    - Reboot

    CCC will not recognise the card and Windows will load the standard vga adapter driver. The Ati installer will crash on both a new install of the drivers and an uninstall of the existing ones.

    Episode two, the right way:

    - Uninstall the vga drivers
    - Use driversweeper to remove the leftovers
    - Flash you bios to another card vendor (Sapphire --> Asus)
    - Reboot
    - Install drivers

    The above is for archival purposes and may help someone in the future :)

    So, enabled voltages in msi afterburner but still a no go. I did however saw some voltage settings in the Asus bios to play with :)

    Update: I played around with voltage settings in the bios, no luck.

    @magicdave26 I think you have the reference card?

    well right now i'm running at 901 mhz on the core clock and its stable I ran future mark 06 and it seems that I lost 20 points and I was running crisis on mixed med/high and on high I seen that my fps is between 32-78.is it possible I am getting a bottle neck with my cpu?
