MSI R5870 Lightning test We test the MSI R5870 Lightning. The MSI R5870 Lightning is from ground up a custom board design. I mean literally the only thing original on that graphics card is the GPU...

You stated in your article 'Radeon HD 5850 review (CrossfireX)' that more Amperes are needed on 12+ V rail for CfX 5850, then for CfX 5870 Lightning in this article now!?

Actually both say 'at least 55 AMPs' for Crossfire which is about right. The TDPs don't differ that much.

    Lightning CFX:
A second card requires you to add another 188 Watts. You need a 700+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system (800 recommended). That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 55 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

    5850 CFX:
A second card requires you to add another 170 Watts. You need a 650+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 55~60 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

I spose all coolers are having problems with the terrible mounting system?

    Very dissapointed with MSI.

Nice card, a pity about the cooler, though. I guess they could have picked a better aftermarket cooler for the same price.

    no biggie with the cooler
first thing you do is take it off and put it aside.
second thing you do is mount a d/ln2 pot on it,no more noise.
if you dont do that and buy this card....the word "tart" or "spaz" comes to mind.
sorta like buying a lambo to have it idled around and never flogged.
no need to spend over 100usd more for this card if you dont care about epeen marks.

Clock speed upped by +50. Plus.
Memory Clock upped by 200. Plus.
Power usage SLIGHTLY higher than standard 5870. Plus.
On average 2-5 FPS more on game performance than standard 5870. Plus.
Turbine jet engine for a cooler. Negative.
$50-100 extra for slight increase. Dealbreaker.

After the lightning editions of Nvidia cards, i was curious to see this review, but i have to say i´m disappointed. For the price difference of more than $50 over an regular 5870, you get an 5% performance increase, a noisy and decent cooler and a average overclocking potential. I´de rather buy a stock 5870 and slap an aftermarket cooler of my choice.

Excellent review as always Hilbert , i enjoy it every word of it. My Team Mate in Team PURE Nickshih have one at 1500 Core on LN2 testing it before going for the kill lol , amazing clocker cherry picked 5870 thats what msi lighting is guys , it is meant for overclocking.
