He did quite well in Empire of the Sun, and I hear well in the Machinist. I still think the main issue was not with Bale (though he didn't do much to improve it), but the script for his character didn't really provide emotional variance that other screenplays may have. You may also have an issue with the director wanting a certain type of acting from Bale to give a greater contrast with Crowe's character and to a certain point, Bale's son. If I recall correctly, the son showed a wide range of emotion who could have been the symbolic stand in for Bale's characters emotion, sometimes in films they do that sort of thing that makes it difficult to gauge (though it could just be bad acting).

On a side note, while not particularly notable acting job, I actually enjoyed Bale in Equilibrium and somewhat less noticed performance in The Prestige (personally liked the trading positions of Bale/Jackman).

    Shutter Island (2010)

An intelligent thriller with an outcome nigh impossible to predict without prior knowledge. Suspenseful and enthralling, Shutter Island combines imagery reminiscent of Hitchcock with momentary departures allusive to Kubrick's The Shining (1980).

Like I said mate, it may be due to the writing of the character but I've seen too many average Bale performances for me to think otherwise. I thought he was pretty average in The Prestige aswell. He either doesn't choose a wide range of roles or he's just not a very good actor.

    Annie Hall

Woody Allen's firmly established himself as one of the best auteurs/directors ever in my books. What I liked about the film most was how much I could relate to it, the portrayal of relationships is very realistic and there were numerous scenes where I thought to myself "I know I've been there". I also saw a lot of myself in the Woody Allen character, the ultimate pessimist always worrying about one thing or the other. On top of all that the film was frickin' hilarious, doesn't rely on dumb jokes like most of today's comedies do but rather relies on wit and irony, you can tell a lot of craft was put into the writing. I especially loved the scene where he's standing in line for a movie and there's a guy behind him spouting crap about Fellini. Christopher Walken's scene was great too, loved Allen's response to him, "Right. Well, I have to - I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth."

Not as good as "Manhattan" or "Crimes and Misdemeanors" but I can confidently say it's one of the best comedies I've seen. It's packed with great lines and one lines without ever coming off as forces or stupid. If you haven't seen this, well, what are you waiting for?

    Dead Silence (2007)

An inferior ghost story which owes homage to Mancini's Child's Play (1988). Attempts to differentiate itself from the endless mass of such adaptations by an imbecilic last-minute plot twist which seems as nonsensical as it does desperate.

Just watched this on Netflix. Turned out to actually be a pretty decent Sci-Fi film, even after all the previews that turned me away early on, as they made it seem to be another gore infested, hardly any story, run of the mill type film that most of its type are more recently. Turned out to be an interesting flick on how earth was destroyed we needed to find a new place to live. Crew was put in hypersleep, 2 members wake up, one goes crazy, the other goes to restart the ship. Along the way he finds out something has gone wrong.

    8½ - 8/10

A riveting experience, difficult to sum up in a few words but I'll try anyway. The film explores the dreams, inner thoughts and fantasies of a famous director suffering "directors block". At first it's hard and confusing to figure out exactly what is going on but as you delve deeper you realise that it's a portrait of a man's mental state whilst he comes to terms with his midlife crisis. Definitely a film you need to watch more than once to truly appreciate, in some ways it reminded me a lot of films like Barton Fink, Inland Empire and Synecdoche, New York. The influence of a film like 8½ is clear from the get go. Marcello Mastroianni was excellent as the lead and apart from the occasional overracting the supporting cast (which consisted of a host of beautiful women) were good too.

Yeah, the first Ace Ventura was the better one, the sequel tried to hard, and became too silly and childish because of it, still had alot of funny moments though.

On that note, watched I Love You Phillip Morris, tbh i had to hide behind the GF a few times, but it did have some good scenes, and was entertaining for the most part.

5/10 if you want a rating, that is a mid/high rating for me, so maybe its i shouldn't rate lol.

I hadn't laughed so hard until a scene in Borat as I did during the 2nd movie when he came out the ass of the fake rino.

    Dawn of the Dead (2004)

A very competent remake of a classic horror film, though comparatively lacking in explicit social commentary. Redeems itself against its 1978 counterpart with credible acting, (limited) character development and high production values. Insufficiently original to warrant the status of 'classic', but a must-see for zombie fans all the same.

I liked this one better than the original which, for me, was terrible, especially compared Night.

    Sin City (2005)

Sets the standard for all noir comic-book based film adaptations with brilliant cinematography, screenplay, casting and -- perhaps most eminently -- atmosphere. A modern classic.

    La Strada - 8/10

Touching neorealist drama made at a time when Fellini still made "straightforward" movies. Starring Anthony Quinn and Giuliana Masina, both in top form. The ending truly left me heartbroken, Quinn's acting was oscar worthy.

Hannah and Her Sisters - 7.5/10

Michael Caine was excellent, had me cringe so many times. Woody Allen's scenes were hilarious. Other than that it's one of the weaker films of his I've seen.

    The Chronicles of Riddick

I´m a fan of sci-fi, the one with spaceships and big guns, weird aliens the all cake.
Unfortunately the gender seems abandoned in the movies, despite series like BG, Stargate and my favourite Babylon 5 keep the gender alive on TV.

So Riddick is a good sci-fi movie with a bad ass anti-hero, nice action scenes and a enjoyable movie specially in HD.

Hadn't seen this for years so it was due a revisit. One of Scorcese's best, second only to Casino. A lot has been said and written about Robert De Niro's performance and yeah, it really is that good. He completely immerses himself into the role and at times you forget your watching an actor playing a part, Robert De Niro IS Jake La Motta. The supporting cast is also very strong especially Joe Pesci in one of his early roles. Scorcese pulls no punches in his depiction of the boxer, he is a loathesome, hateful and is a selfish man but you can't help but feel a little sorry for him when you see him at the end with his bloated self. The black and white cinematography was also excellent, it really is hard to fault a movie this good.

    The Purple Rose of Cairo

What would it be like if a character from one of your favourite movies leaped down from the screen into the real world? No, I'm not taking about 'Last Action Hero'. Here Woody Allen examines the relationship between film and it's audience and the power cinema can have on someone's life. The result is weird yet charming and at times hilarious, yet it's utterly unique and unlike most other movies I've seen. Jeff Daniels shows a lot of promise in one of his earlier roles and Mia Farrow is good as usual. Contains the sort of sharp humour you'd expect from a Woody Allen movie although he doesn't have a role this time, those looking for a few laughs won't be disappointed and may even shed a tear or two. I can totally see why Allen himself would rate this as one of his best movies.
