Most underrated and Overrated game

Guys what do you think are the games that got to much hype and those that didn't get the attention they deserved.

Overrated: Can't think of one now (I would say WOW but I have never played it)

Oblivion is the most overrated IMHO. As for underrated, I haven't seen a game that surprised me lately.

 

STALKER, Oblivion, Halo and FEAR are all overrated.

Half Life 2 is underrated. It simply is the most cinematic and spectacular game out there, but for some reason it isn't #1 on some people's lists.

Over rated?

Halo comes to mind as it is fun, but very easy and rather bland. FEAR and Doom 3 also pop up as horribly long and drawn out with essentially the same levels dragged out (I thought the labs levels were never going to end in Doom 3 for instance). FEAR redeemed itself a bit with the weapons, but even then it grew stale.

Under rated?

Half-Life 1 tends to be forgotten today even though it helped to mold the FPS genre into what it is today. Not to mention all of the mods that are out, and still being made for it even after nearly ten years now. It is one of the games that should be on every gamer's list to play at least once.

Alpha Centauri was also a very good fun game, as was Civilization II: Test of Time. Beetle Adventure Racing was a relatively quiet game even though it was an absolute blast to play. Hydro Thunder also seemed to die early from what I recall (I had to resort to Amazon for a copy less than a year after release), and while it was short, it was a fun arcade boat racing game and looked absolutely gorgeous on the Nintendo 64. There are plenty more I'm sure, but those tend to stick out to me.

 

Hydro Thunder was one overlooked Racing Titles for the N64 Also the Original San Francisco Rush was a bit underrated imo.

 

IMO Half-Life 2 is the most over-rated piece of junk ever produced. Shooting lacks any balls since the weapons are powerless and the sounds lack energy, the game is cinematic in a way, sure, but there are way too many boring, silent spots in the game. Driving the "Buggy" was one of the most tedious aspects of the game, it wasn't fun at all. The levels are linear, the AI is dumb and the only genuinely fun part of the game was using the blue Gravity Gun in the last few levels (using corpses as weapons ). On the other hand, a game which has received surprisingly little attention from the PC community is GTA: Vice City, which happens to be my favorite game of all time.

 

Overated: Easily Oblivion (good Graphics but crap gameplay to me and it takes up 75% of the screenshot thread).

Underated: Hitman: Blood Money - easily one of the best games out there right now and I still play it everyday and not get bored.

Half Life 2 had simply too much to live up to. Episode 1 bored me to tears. I hope Episode 2 will be more worthwhile.

 

Overrated: CS(S), BF series, HL 2 (today, it was good back then)

I don't know any underrated games.

 

Decane I'm with you on the topic of Vice City, I loved that game and all the car mods that were put out for it. Sadly I can't find my CD's for it anymore.

 

Overrated: CSS, BF2,Stalker, Halo series, Supreme Commander.
Underrated: Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Criminal Origins, Tiberium Sun.

 

I can't agree much more with that. To me Vice City was the best GTA series released on PC apart from the original. Stunning stuff, the modifications were awsome. I might reinstall it actually .

IMO San Andreas was way overrated, but Vice City and even GTAIII were spectacular. Vice City had so much atmosphere that you could just spend the whole day driving you PCJ600 and listening to Laslow's hilarious comments on Vrock. Man, that really brings back memories.... *Sighs* And I never did bother purchasing it for the PC, only had it for the PS2.

As to why San Andreas pales in comparison with the other installments of the series, well, the whole "ghetto" thing just didn't appeal to me like the brilliant mafia-theme in the other installments, and though the devs definitely expanded upon GTA with San Andreas, the new features just felt too "glued" to the base game. Atmosphere has always been important to me, and this is where Vice City excels IMO. Dues Ex and its sequel also had great atmosphere, as did both Max Payne's (the first one in particular). //end off-topic
