I only have hope that it wont stick to windows 8, becouse directx could be a disaster too like everything that Microsoft does lately.

Can't wait, looking forward to it.
Not sure why people are negative about DX12 when it offers so much for games.

"Anyway, March 20th we'll learn more about the up and coming DX12. let;s just hope you are not forced to upgrade to a new version of Windows to be able to use it."

Well, DX 11.2 is Windows 8.1 exclusive, no love to 7. So unless MS pulled that very large sick out of their butt, the most we can hope for is for DX 12 to be on 8.1.

In other words, we pretty much know before the announcement that if you are not already on Windows 8.1, you will have to upgrade. And to a lesser extent based on MS track record, even 8.1 users might get boned at this rate in favor of 8.2 or 9.

Probably require windows 8.1 and 9. if it require 8 it's ok but if it sole only on windows 9, then they learnt nothing.

Am pretty sure you are right. These guys need to make money and all of us would have done the same if we controlled M$. Let's hope we won't have to wait till Win 9.

In other matter, I guess this is the reason why Nvidia was so quiet about the whole Mantle thing. Let's just hope that DX12 is really close to mantle in terms of performance advantages and then we can all forget the proprietary nonsesne crap and that it will support older hardware as well. At least one gen backwards

If this is another carrot from MS to get us to upgrade, I'll pass.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson and won't offer an exclusive version of Halo 3 that only runs on DX12. :p

Directx 12 will probably be for Windows 9. People whinging that there's no Windows 7 or 8.1 need to realise that it's a business.

Awww so you bought a new car and 2 years later they bring out a better engine. Oh wait? You can't get a free upgrade? You going to whinge about that too?!

Will Directx 12 be a software improvement, or will it require new supporting hardware? It could be a combination of the two, in that new hardware will get the most benefit, but existing hardware could still benefit. Also, will it require Directx 12 games to get any benefit, or will the benefit translate back through previous Directx games (yes, this is possible and would be a great selling point for it)!

Implementation of a radically new Directx will require a new driver model, and it may simply be not worth it for Microsoft to support it on anything but Windows 9. Remember by supporting it on an OS you are no longer making money on, as an additional feature, a feature that is a selling point for your new OS, would be just silly. This is especially true if you have to do a lot of work for it to actually get it working properly, which they would probably have to do.

I dare say Directx 12 will go hand-in-hand with a new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), requiring completely new drivers. If done correctly, this would mean essentially everything running close to the metal, which would also another reason why it would simply be too difficult to implement on WDDM 1.3 (Windows 8.1).

Even if it is exclusive to Win8.1, they'll drop like they did with DX11 of which they ended up "porting" to Vista after making 11 Win7 exclusive.

No.. dont even think about it.. you.. yes, you, the one whos thinking of posting of how "rubbish" vista was and why you'd want to even stay on it. This is not a debate.

    Hugs and Kisses,

So are you saying you think that Windows 7 will not support 11.2 and will for whatever reason skip it and support 12? Pretty wishful thinking. I hope you're right. I'm not aware of release a Windows that supports a version of DX and not every version before it.

AMD brought mantle support for 2 years old cards. Not only 290 series.

What M$ doing is not a business, its a robbery. Windows 7 is still supported, not like expired XP. Not like I care for DX12. Mantle does that and more, not much to lose for AMD owners.

And it will take another 2 years for developers to implement DX12. So yeah, expect DX12 around 2017.

Porting DX11 to Vista didn't "hurt" Windows 7, nor did Vista's DX10 exclusivity, and DX11.1/11.2 exclusivity for Windows 8 help them by any substantial degree

Even for Microsoft, there's a potential business benefit by porting DX12 to the older operating systems. It would decrease the appeal of using OpenGL instead of DX
