i went to install an old ladies ethernet card for her dsl and it asked for the windows cd....which of course she didn't have. So i hit cancel and it asked me to restart. Then before post it come up with 3 registry errors. Asking for 3 different .VXD files. After you hit enter to continue, windows loads up, then another error comes up asking for a .DLL, it says the DLL is asociated with Microsoft Network.
So, then later that day she got ahold of the win98se cd and i removed the ethernet card from the device manager and restarted. then i re-installed the drivers this time with the win98cd and ethernet disk. She still gets the errors. i ran regclean once, installed all the software from the win98 disc then uninstalled whatever i didn't want/need. Changed setting in network from client for microsoft network to family login or whatever it's called. Any idea how to get rid of these? it's really pissin' me off.

  2. Weird .. What you can do is write down the .VXD's, and then manually seek+remove them from the registry. It's a bit tricky. But if you are sure they are only used with the NIC then it's relatively safe to remove them.

However, a clean/fresh windows install would probably be the best solution here since that wouldn't take you more than one hour to do so ..
ran regedit and removed the 2 vxd files folders. Those errors don't come up during boot now. But,..........i still get that dll related error after boot. The file is msnp32.dll. in the same box it says that file is asociated with microsoft network. Friggin' windows assuming that you're gonna use their stupid stuff. I hate that.

any ideas how to get rid of that?
Microsoft network protocol dynamically loadable library file. Something in windows still calls this library, probably something srom registry, but you might want to chech system.ini and win.in files.

Well you gotta know what's inside those dll files to guess what's calling them (unless you found them in your registry or win.ini and system.ini files). And even best programmers at microsoft would have hard time doing that.
