Shortly after the Nvidia announcement, Microsoft follows by adding DirectX Raytracing to the DirectX 12 api. According to the manufacturer, the technology clears the way for games that are partly buil... Microsoft announces DirectX Raytracing for real-time raytracing
So it will run on new generation of GPUs only and only with DX12, if its true, its big problem for Vulkan and multiplatform development.
There are not that many raytracing effects and there is no secret sauce. For next few years raytraced content in games will be about cheaping out really heavy workload without affecting visuals too badly. And telling someone about method used will be enough for other side to develop similar technique. Over 10 years ago you had raytracing software like Bryce 3D, that did run on CPU or via network CPU farm. Today you can laugh at such rendering software with 60 times more compute capable chips as Ryzen. And compute capabilities of GPUs are still better.
Ok so we still dont need to care about DX12, unless you wan to play Gears of war 4 or Forza, fine.. And even that you could just let Xbox for few days..
