Maybe this is a general increase in DRAM prices and includes GDDR SDRAM as well. Memory manufacturers need their own slice of the mining fanatics' greasy pie. All in all, since ordinary folks are unable to buy video cards, it should somewhat reduce the interest in building a new desktop PC. Maybe the laptop market increases further to compensate. But then again, there will be plenty of people planning a new Intel PC based on the new CPUs. Many of them would need to buy a new set of faster RAM.

Greed has a contagious effect with these companies.
    It is like falling dominos.
One influences the others until somebody stands them all up....and then it starts all over again.

Yeah, don't bother with that until it has matured, which will be 4 years from now.

Not buying modules with their chips so, yea. Good luck with that Micron.

Even when new platforms supporting DDR5 come to market, people will have choice and will be able to buy top offerings with DDR4.

I intend to sit on 3900X at least till 2nd generation of AM5 comes. But if Ryzen 7000G APUs are awesome, I may build some micro system just for fun. Or get new laptop.
But AMD still needs to invade Tablet / 2-in-1 space. I am not buying something that has neither 360° mode, nor detachable keyboard. And I expect touchscreen (stylus as bonus).

And that kind of means I am not going to use DDR5 any time soon.

    they're going ballistix

    me too.
just look at ddr4,it takes 2-3 generations for the imc to really support fast memory.
haswell, broadwell, early skylake - pretty unimpressive.I think it was kaby that really let your ddr4 hit those +4G speeds
same for ryzen, with shorther intervals between generations.

Just look at the broadwell as a first ddr4 platform its usable system even today while haswell as a last ddr3 looks ancient. There is always a price premium for early adopters but at the end its worth it.
Instead of upgrading from my 2700X to 5800X i'll wait for am5/ddr5 and jump right on it. Im sure it will destroy zen3 and crappylake.

why I foresee us, hardware enthusiasts, as a dying breed? insane priced hardware parts, console ports, gaming industry become more greedy than ever, and so on.
    too much doom and gloom?

I've been on this forum since 2004 - I've seen this sentiment so many times over the years.. it's not dying. PC Gaming itself is growing, significantly and for every person you get into PC Gaming some number of those people will ultimately end up building their own PCs for the rest of their life.

At this point, since it will probably be another 5 years until PCs are affordable (and worth it) to build again, I feel like it's almost not worth following anymore.
