He should never had passed the information from the scanner on, the results could have been absolutely dire. He did so knowing exactly what would happen, he screwed up.

    Exactly.

The man is a journalist with the ability to have far reaching effect via social media, something he understands extremely well. While the information was elsewhere, as I mentioned earlier it spread like wildfire once the it was released by Kaczynski and other journalists, the consequences could have been far worse. He should have reported that the police were investigating suspects and left it at that, there was no need to release names.

Ok, so what's the final approval of truth then? To what degree of accuracy does something need to be confirmed before any reporter related to any news source, blog, etc is able to post it or even mention it? Do we need a statement from police? Visual confirmation? Do I need the reporter to physically see the act? Especially in today's ultra connected age, in a country that's driven by getting the everything the fastest. There is even a financial incentive to drive people to publish without getting all the details - because people want it and they want it now. It happens in tech journalism, it happens in car journalism, it happens everywhere. $100 says dozens of other journalists retweeted or tweeted the same report. It's like a fault with journalism, our society, not just the person tweeting it.

Nor to mention that the guy wrote that the source was from a police scanner. But I guess I forget we live in a time where people can't be bothered to use their brain and consider the source. Something I learned in 3rd grade.

But I guess it doesn't surprise me. I mean just look at the Russia propaganda thing. They sit there and have meetings where the head of multiple intelligence agencies all claim they are 100% confident that Russia spread propaganda in order to manipulate the election results - yet when any detailed questions are asked regarding it, it's "a secret". How else do you expect news organizations to report news when everything is a "secret" and behind closed doors. Everything is wishy washy, it's a report of a report. It's from a police scanner. It's from a leaked document. It's from whatever.

It's a giant ****ing mess and while I think the guy here from CNN is a dick for how he went about this, I think most of what people are upset about here is a societal problem and not one specifically with this guy. It happens on CNN, it happens on Fox news, it happens everywhere. I don't know how to fix it, but I think we can start by at least verifying the **** we are posting before we post it, especially in a thread of people complaining about not verifying it.

    Here is a perfect example:

    http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/pol...uggests-he-makes-fake-stories-mislead-n780301

You literally have a Governor of a State admitting he makes up fake stories for news outlets and yet we sit here and we blame journalists because they report on stuff that that was said over a police scanner.

For someone calling people out on their integrity, it's pretty telling you had to issue your own correction just a few posts up. Yeah yeah, you're not a professional journalist, you shouldn't be expected to know about everything you say.

So I wonder where you read it from? Guess one of your news sources ****ed up too, but you won't take them to task. But then I guess when your sources are memes on facebook, its hard to remember where you got lied to.

Think about it, and ask yourself, seriously, what you're doing. You accused a journalist of being responsible for a man's suicide, which you ostensibly got from somewhere...and you say nothing about that. Nothing about the source, nothing about why you thought that, or how bad it is to accuse people of manslaughter... But the journalist who reported entirely factual things as they happened? That's just a step too far.

You're trying to call me out on something I admitted was an issue and corrected immediately, I am not a Journalist by trade and my statements do not have reaching effect. If your argument has devolved into ad-hominem you clearly don't have much of one to begin with. Also, I never accused a journalist of being at fault for a mans suicide. I stated that the man had committed suicide and I linked the aforementioned corrected source from Milo Y.

Also note how I listed more than one source, the other has remained in place because it remains valid.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to do that, I did do that. You ****ed up, whatever source you read it from ****ed up, but you don't care about that. Why? Why are you only concerned when the source is incorrect AND says things you don't like?

I just wanted to illustrate your false and politically motivated outrage, that's all. Thanks for the help.

You're now trying to put words in my mouth.

You do not have a point here, the very fact I removed the source and admitted to its falsehood proves that I care. What on earth is wrong with you? I think you're just upset that you were called out for your lack of foresight. I admitted to my mistake, you acted as though it was acceptable for a journalist to release police scanner data that could have been severely damaging to the accused. I think it's telling that one of us has shifting morals, and that isn't me.

Has a clear implication that the false allegations is what caused the suicide.

I'm not blaming you for doing this, but do you see how hard this is? Even if you didn't mean it that way, I read it that way. Suddenly you're fake news.

Now combine that with authoritative sources like the Governor of a State, or even reports of the White House itself purposely leaking fake information and it's like wtf is anyone supposed to do. You wait too long to report and guess what, it has zero value. Someone already beat you to the punch on the story and something like 90%+ people only ever read the first story published about an event.

It's literally impossible to reach the level of accuracy people want and it only seems to be getting significantly worse.

Again to be clear, I'm not attacking you. I don't think you're a bad person. I'm just saying our society is clearly in a tough spot and honestly when I read threads like this I get extremely depressed. It's like no one even gives a ****.

I understand where you're coming from, it's easy to have a knee jerk reaction when you're angry over something. That's something that happens all too often, and you're correct that I should have worded things more clearly. I'm more than happy to take ownership of my faults, I probably should have stepped back and posted while having a more clear head on the subject.

My issue stands however, he shouldn't have released the names. Nobody should have, I don't think people realise how dangerous that could have been. The outrage at the time was through the roof, if the poor sod wasn't already dead can you imagine if he was recognised by an irate crowd in the street? Integrity is important to anyone, but more so to people in the positions of the media. They have incredible reach, they should be more careful, they should be above the plebs such as random forum posters on reddit or even here on guru.

I stated earlier that my issue isn't just with this guy, it's with the media and even the political world in general. Everything is a massive mess, and I agree that it's something we should be trying to fix. The culture of speed over accuracy for 'value' is something I see as part of that problem, and while it is an issue with society I'd also argue that some people know better than others and as such hold more guilt for their actions.

It's sad that if you say something over and over, no matter how ridiculous, people begin to believe it. You have actual video and audio recordings of this man saying things, he then calls it fake, and people believe it.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of him, imagine what this is going to do to the criminal justice system. Am I going to be able to commit a crime where there's video evidence of me doing it, and all I have to do is claim it as fake and get off?

    @Denial:

I see you deleted your response to my post. But I have a response to yours.

A journalist should unequivocally be certain about any information that will directly affect the rest of someone life before putting it out there. Once it is out there it can not be taken back. Journalist have to put integrity ahead of self promotion .

You realize his comments were made on the subreddit called "I'm Going to Hell for This" where the entire point is to be a provocative troll, right?

Calling some silly trolling online racism/this/that is a complete media/SJW style twisting and exaggeration of nothing. Oh no, something mean posted on the internet in a troll subforum! Anything but that!

And it doesn't matter even if his comments were serious, what CNN did was blackmail for their own (what they thought to be) benefit, nothing else in this story should be relevant. If it is to you, then you're saying "doxxing is okay so long as it's against those I disagree with".

**** CNN. Maybe you haven't read how they previously caused the suicide of a young man, or the other tons of outrageous BS they've done? They are nothing but a propaganda machine. I'm done here.

Don't know anyone who still likes CNN. Between constant call outs on falsehoods and now this, I don't see them surviving much longer.

Meh I watch as many "news" outlets as possible. The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle of the spin.

I didn't delete my post, it's on the front page.

No, absolutely not - some of his comments were on /r/imgoingtohellforthis but not all of them - and the point of imgoingtohell is to be funny. It's dark humor, his posts were arguments with other members of the forum and weren't funny at all. He had no issue wanting other people to get doxxed.

Just look at his snoo analysis page:

    https://snoopsnoo.com/u/HanAs*holeSolo

He used the N word so many times the algorithm thinks he is one, not to mention his word cloud of garbage.

It stopped being an exaggeration out of nothing when the comments trolls are making are being published to the twitter account of the President of the US. Which is clearly "I dislike CNN because they lie about me negatively" but never do you see "I dislike fox because they lie about me positively". You know how many times I've heard Fox News achors say "We're hearing reports the suspect is blahblah" after a shooting, or attack?

Took me literally 5 seconds to find this:

I can post a million more times they were wrong about a report and recanted a story - yet I don't see a massive outcry here for fox news anchors to step down. I don't see the president posting fake news memes of him body slamming fox news into oblivion. I guess it doesn't fit the agenda.

And then we have people like you who just post memes insulating more fake nonsense. People like you who's mind is so feeble that you make comments like this:

As if people can't hold two non-mutually exclusive opinions about a topic. I already said that what CNN did was wrong and the guy should be fired - but spreading more misinformation like you are is just as bad and it also makes you a giant hypocrite. See, just like that I'm able to hold both those opinions without thinking doxxing is ok. It's easy, you should try it sometime.

And no, I don't know about CNN causing a suicide, unless you're talking about what Darkest posted, which was already discussed.

I should also point out that I'm a registered Republican and I've never voted democrat - but the stuff that's happening now is absolutely insane to me. To the point where I'm convinced that 50 years from now they are going to find something in the water that was rotting brains or something. I've had discussions with people who are convinced the entirety of the intelligence committee, all 17 agencies, is a liberal plot to destroy Donald trump and America, that the entire Russia propaganda/election is completely fake. It's like loose change on steroids - and our president is sitting there spreading it while simultaneously attacking the institutions that are trying to get to report on it, not just CNN, but all of them. It's embarrassing.

Either way this topic has become way too politicized for me so I won't be posting in it again.

This is exactly why there should be a term limit regardless of your elected position in every country. Both sides are insane and are power hungry

Another problem is the idea there are only two sides.
