This is wonderful news, I just hope we won't see any woke trash involved here. Max Payne 1,2,3 are some of my favorite games. Hell, Max Payne 3 is probably the most favorite of all of them (I know, some will disagree). That soundtrack alone is worthy of praise. I sincerely hope Remedy can deliver on this one. The perfect recipe and ingredients are already there - I just hope for proper execution.
The original games work just fine on Win 10/11 if you want to play them again. They even support widescreen without stretching after patching them up. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Max_Payne
Definitely with you there on MP3 being my favorite of the series. It had incredible bullet time effects for the time and I really enjoyed the way they treated the game almost like an interactive movie. Really enjoyed the storytelling and character building/development.
@Memorian: If you actually read that PCGW page, there is a link to ThirteenAG's widescreen fix to get rid of the stretching. He has patches for both MP games and many more older classics. The fix can also translate API from d3d8 to d3d9 as d3d8 is broken in win10.
d3d8 is not broken in win10 Max Payne is broken on Win10, it uses dllmain to initialize the renderer and encounters a deadlock with certain vendor drivers when certain feature suites are installed (GFE!) The same issue manifests on windows 7 or 8 when using dgvoodoo (and affects the 3dmark cores of that time) the only reason for translating to D3D9 is that Optimus traditionally doesn't work for 8 and earlier, leaving the application stuck on the IGP I don't think thats the case now that Windows has taken over the assignment of default GPU.
Interesting. I didn't have any deadlocks (never had Optimus or GFE), but for me VSync never worked in any d3d8 game in win10, like Unreal 2, UT2004, both MP games etc. In MP games it also takes forever to get back to main menu, but it is instant with that fix.
Well, for me it doesn't (I just checked) so tough luck I guess... There is like 3800 FPS in MP1 menu with d3d8 and no way to force VSync anywhere for d3d8 (no setting in game and NVCP is ignored). But then again I am still on win10 1909 so don't know if there has been any progress from MS side.
ah, my mistake, i misremembered the launcher options for Max Payne 1, it has vsync enabled by default under normal cases but the same issue that results in dllmain deadlocking causes it not to enable vsync on 10, several of my emulators have d3d8 either via plugin or implemented internally and the vsync of these works as they should on W10, with max payne the promotion to d3d9 allows driver vsync to work from the nvcp, and dgvoodoo enables the ability to set vsync via an app profile without overriding at the driver.
I remember when max payne 1 came, i was new to pc stuff, and tweaking, that game was running on riva tnt2 graphic card, it was amazing when i was enlightened me on how to install a graphics driver for my geforce 2 mx 440 64mb ram back then, it was good old time for pc gaming, as consoles were on the back end of gaming
Max Payne 1 and 2 are fully playable on Win10 with a few fan made fixes. I replayed both last year, and once I applied the fixes they both ran wonderfully with no issues.
Great games but it feels so dated. Curently replaying Control with raytracing so im happily waiting for next gen remakes. Have high hopes for it.
Doesn't feel dated to me. The Max Payne games are still solid games with great controls, a fantastic camera, great visuals... I personally don't think they need to be remade. The originals still work fine and are a blast to play.
It does look great for its time but i think they deserve a remakes if its done right. Do i have to post Control screens to show how actually great modern visuals looks like?
These two games are remembered with great nostalgia; I've played the 3rd twice, another great game. Remake the games but please don't rework them.
those two games are among the best of the best. very much deserves these fresh remakes. also, those type of games are rare these days - linear, short compared to the modern single player, mature and full of quality. in these years of being in my 30's i am happy to play games that i can finish in 10 to 14 hours. not always have the time spared for those long single players. cool video i encountered lately -
No. I've played all of Remedy's games, including Quantum Break and Control. And I agree, the Northlite engine looks amazing. But... I also don't believe a game should be remade just because it could look better. I think remakes should be reserved for games with potential, that could benefit from newer tech.
