Linux is an operating system obviously you already knew that. It's open-source meaning everyone and anyone can change something in it if you have the know how. One thing that keeps most people away from linux is the fact that it's not like windows. It has no or little GUI(graphical user interface i.e. icons, and the look of Windows) there are a whole bunch of different verions of linux some are meant for servers some are meant for music some are meant for word processing. Another thing about linux is the fact that some to most hardware isn't supported under it. if anyone has anything to add or correct about what i said then do so.....i'm goin' by what linux distributions were like 6-12months ago.
oh also linux can be downloaded for free or purchased for like 1/8 the cost of a windows product. hell you can even pick up a copy of Maximum Linux magazine and sometimes they'll have some verion of a linux on a cd that comes with it. That's how i got my copy of linux Mandrake 7.1.

This message was edited by WeaZel on 12 May 2001 09:21 AM

I've got a copy. It could kill windows.
here is the part that is easy for me to say, hard for someone else to do. They just have to make it simple to install, setup and use. Just like windows.

I have used several versions of Linux. It is extremely stable and maximizes CPU performance, among other things. I prefer this OS.

indeed, it would kill windows IF AND ONLY IF enough cool games & software were compatible with it.....then ppl would even start using it...but about 95% of the current software available only runs at windows

Well if the user base was there, I think some guy would create a program that would run windows stuff on linux. Hell they have them for Apples.
