It's probably a child pornography filter. We have one over here made by KRIPOS, as well, implemeneted by some ISP's, but it has no pratical value at all. It doesn't stop those who seek this crap in the first place (who are seriously dumb enough to look for this crap on google or whatever...). But that's also the only thing it tries to filter, everything else goes through, no matter how depraved it may be.

    Edit: I was right:

I see Finland and Sweden, as well as the Netherlands and the UK and so on, have these filters as well, so they're probably a lot more common than you'd think.

Though, as I understand it, this Australian thing is taking things a few steps further.

I don't see what the big deal is. Sure, the government is removing a facet of "freedom", but if you classify freedom as CP, porno, "how to make a bomb" and gambling, you have a twisted sense of freedom.

As long as I can still go to all the website I visit now, and join a dedicated game server, I could care less.

BUT, is it going to go as far as P2P? Will I still be able to direct IP to, say, another Dawn of War player?

Bittorrent is probably going to go out the window. LOL.

The big deal is, peoples' freedom of expression will be curtailed. Its being introduced under the guise of stopping CP, but most likely be used to spy on citizens and political opponents.

    LOL. No... ROFLWTFBBQ.

    Spying on Australians? Political opponents?

This is a pretty simple country, mate. If we're not drunk on the beach, we're drunk at a BBQ.

The only thing stopping me moving from Australia right now is spiders and university. There are other things too, but I would rather live in Australia than many of the countries people live in that belong to this forum.

The big deal is, is a waste of taxpayers money.

Secondly, it's designed to block "RC Content" Refused Classification. And because we have crappy classifications on things, there's a whole lot more that could be blocked than just illegal things.

Now Child porn is blocked. Good, Google and other search engines don't list that stuff in the first place, they've already said that.

These perverts have small private websites probably un-known to any normal person or anything the filter can block.

So not only are we A.) Wasting money. B.) Trying to block things that won't work. It's also very easy to bypass, and any 12 year old already knows how to do it, because kids these days use Proxies to bypass my filters to get to websites they want.

So we've gone from something that is JUST to block illegal content (Even though the exact terms they used is Refused Classification, which is very different to Illegal) and now the Christian Lobby wants to block things like Gambling, Pornography and all those other types of things which aren't illegal, but don't fit in with their views.

Ontop of all this, Filters = Slower networks. Because stuff is being filtered.
So the PM complains about how slow our Internet is in terms of speeds compared to the world, and now we're going to put a Filter infront of it, and make it even slower.

Now the reports said that the performance drop was 'minimal'. But of course, they didn't test it with high speed broadband, and only tested it with connections 8Mb and lower. So when we get to the NBN that Australia is putting in, and try and put filters infront of the FTTP network, things are going to suck really hard.

This money spent, is better off on a campaign and resources to teach kids how to protect themselves in REAL life, where the damage is actually done, and on the Internet and how to avoid dodgy websites.

It's also the parents jobs to monitor their kids regularly, simple things like having the computer in the loungeroom and not in a kids room has already proven to be far more effective than any filter.

Gambling. Here's something I picked up during my RSA/RCG course. A pub isn't allowed to advertise it has gambling inside, but what sign is on the front of every pub and club in Australia? That's right: TAB. Why? Because the government runs it, and of course the government knows best.

Pornography. Filtering pornography is the biggest LOL of the lot! Where is the only place in Australia where you can buy porno? Canberra!

Bombs. Where is the only place in Australia where you can buy bombs (firecrackers :p )?? Canberra!

I just love how this country makes sense. Maybe, just maybe, the politicians aren't as smart as we think they are. Maybe, just maybe, politicians are the dweebs from school who did all their homework, rubbed the teachers shoes and got good marks? And maybe they get sold snake oil once every now and again.

That's slightly amusing and slightly sad how hypocritical they are

    @helldragon89

No buddy, your thinking of the U.S. Don't make me educate you on the things the U.S has done:

"The mujahideen were significantly financed and armed (and are alleged to have been trained) by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the Carter[5] and Reagan administrations, the government of Saudi Arabia, Zia-ul-Haq's military regime in Pakistan, Iran, the People's Republic of China and several Western European countries. The Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was the interagent used in the majority of these activities to disguise the sources of support for the resistance. Under Reagan, US support for the mujahideen evolved into an official U.S. foreign policy, known as the Reagan Doctrine, which included U.S. support for anti-Soviet movements in Afghanistan, Angola, Nicaragua and elsewhere.["

"This movement became known as the Taliban"

    Har har! :p

I was thinking to myself, maybe this would be better implemented on a "user by user" basis. Although the technology is there at the DNS, only if you opt in when you make your ISP account will your content be filtered.

    Like a super 'net-nanny.

Well if it was DNS there would be very little performance loss.
The problem is it's DNS based and Proxy based.

With things like OpenDNS, now offering things like Porn filtering, coupled with the ability to lock the Safe Search in Google now, plus all the other programs that prevent kids from browsing bad software, there's no need for a filter.
