I am constantly hooking up and disconnecting my laptop to my monitor, KB/mouse, and sound system, and am getting very annoyed with all the cables getting tangled and the general PITA it is to do this. I am thinking about getting a USB docking station but from what I can tell they have their own video drivers which probably means I won't be able to game through the device. Is this correct?

Bump. Anybody know how these things transmit the video signal over USB?

True docks are built to be drop on and work instantly.

The laptop will have a long rectangular proprietary slot on the base that interfaces with the dock to provide all USB, Sound, and video throughput.

If the laptop doesn't have the right support, you're stuck with buying a 10 port USB hub and using that...
