Just returned to the Nvidia fold after a good 10+ years way. Looking for advice!

Howdy fellow Nvidians! Well after many years of being a strictly AMD/Radeon guy it came time to do an upgrade and the best bang for buck was an Intel i9 and an RTX 3070 Ti (specifically "Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Gaming OC 8GB").

As it's so long since I had an Nvidia card I'm a little lost with the options/settings and would appreciate any tips/tricks/advice to what settings to use and what to avoid to get the best visual acuity out of the card?

So far I've just been installing all the games I own to see how they look/run maxed out without really knowing what I should/shouldn't be using in the Nvidia settings themselves.

I tend to configure power mode to normal in global section and then to performance in games` profiles.

Is monitor G-Sync compatible?

 

very good card performance-wise, but for the price should be coming with at least 10gb of vram.
dunno what has to be done on amd, but there is basically nothing to do in terms of maxing the 3070 out apart from just installing the drivers and that's it.
definitely do some uv though. start at 900mv and see if you can do 1900mhz stable. it's a little conservative, but it will do for a fairly safe first attempt at uv.
touching power options in nvcp shouldn't really be necessary.

 

• Resizeable BAR only affects games NVIDIA whitelisted (unless you change 3 flags through NVIDIA Inspector though per-game profiles or possibly globally)
• If you install an overclocking tool (like MSI Afterburner, not sure about GeForce Experience), maxing the power limit is free safe performance
  
• NVIDIA GPUs have an auto-overclock method; you can use it from GeForce Experience, or MSI Afterburner (OC Scanner)
• Vsync can apparently negatively affect VR; either set it off globally or per-game profiles for VR games

 

Much thanks for the excellent tips folks! I'm still waiting for the new motherboard (and LGA 1700 AIO bracket to arrive) so for now just using the card with my old Ryzen CPU so there's not much point doing any tweaking yet but I'm looking forward to getting the whole new system put together!

"Don't use (install) Geforce experience" can be a good advice too.

Configure Resizable BAR correctely as more game benefit of it with time.
Your gigabyte is a very nice 3070Ti board, you will be happy of it.

No FreeSync/G-Sync. At least it is flicker free.
I now spoiled by FreeSync/G-Sync feature so I will always chase models with it.

PS
Also, advice - do not update drivers with Internet connection. It can ruin driver installation because sometimes Windows is fast enough to start its own driver installation (from Windows Catalogue) when driver installation launched by you uninstalls current driver.

 

it does have freesync premium, so g-sync should work too.same as on my gigabyte.

Be aware that NVIDIA cards support FreeSync only through DisplayPort (at least that was the case so far).

 

Nvidia also support HDMI 2.1 VRR + their own proprietary protocol extension that might also work with monitors without HDMI 2.1 (not sure about that, but some LG OLED TVs use/used it).

 

I bought new cables last week, 3m both HDMI and Displayport in case one works better than the other! Although tbh I don't use freesync because it disables too many other settings on the monitor that I do need to use to make it eye comfortable (age thing!) but I will experiment with the Displayport cable when the new system is all together

Looks like the new motherboard is finally getting dispatched and it appears the one thing that'll hold up my build is the 2 EUR LGA 1700 upgrade kit needed for the AIO watercooler! Amazon ETA is end of Dec/Early Jan

 

Freesync HDMI is an LG spec licensed to AMD, nvidia can't implement support without also obtaining a license.
