Seeing how the York Region Transit has been on strike without a single regards to us students (incl. me) and other commuters who rely on the transit, I would incline to agree what he means, but not the exact wording. Sometimes these unions are out of hand! I agree they should exist, but should have a limit to how long they can strike for before arbitration. With the unions rejecting the company's offer to get back on the negotiation table is also unacceptable to me as someone who uses the transit daily.

York Region Transit, on strike for almost 1.5 months and counting... really needs to be back to work. At least it's not as bad as the York University strike of 2008-2009 when the school was closed for 3 months.

For the record I dont think his point is valid, the government have made every attempt to avoid discussing the issue with the unions.
Maybe the unions are run by gold diggers but they are still the best hope for getting a resolution that is seen to be fair.

But it was still funny :)

What if the company's counter offer is outrageous?
These days company offers seem to be massive cuts to things like health insurance. The problem is that you automatically blame the union for the strike. Certainly, it can be caused by unions wanting too much, but it is at least as common that the company wants to screw over the workforce. This is ensured by the fact that a strike is very hard on both employees and unions. No income going in to anyone's pockets. Bills don't get paid. People aren't going to strike just because.

Comments like this make me sick inside.

Unions are essential for workers to preserve their rights, they do make mistakes but when governments are talking about making people work above 40 years of contributions before pension is uncivilized.

So unless your some rich ass investment banker stop condemning your fellow average workers to more hardship.

This is Clarkson being Clarkson and that's why we love him, boycott perhaps the best show the BBC does?, heck no.

Whilst i don't agree they should be shot, i do think they need a good slap. Sure it's hard times BUT taking ambulances of the road (they did that in manchester) and having operations canceled in hospitals (how stupid is that) and then shuttng 90% of schools (making it so parents had to stay of work costing them money), they want my support BUT they're making it hard for me to give it with stunts like this.

    It is not a stunt.

Its called the right to strike, this happens when the government doesn't want to listen and is kicking hard working people to the curb.

150 years ago people used to get shot in the face for striking so its not funny business at all.

Stunt - Something done to attract attention or publicity. That's what a strike is, they want attention from the government and publicity via the papers/news and to get people on there side (but this is just wording really).

I'll say this, my last job was working within the Manchester City Councils medical rehousing team, i lost that job due to the bugest cuts (along with 17 other people in my section) so i actully agree with strikes. BUT (and this is a big one) i don't agree with strikes that put lifes at risk (ambulances of the road) and cause other people in similar situations hardship (90% of schools closed and operations canceled) which this one did, by doing that they lost all my suppot.

Same with the fireman strikes a number of years ago, i agreed that they deserved a pay increase BUT as soon as they took the trucks off the roads during the strikes they lost my support because they put peoples lifes at risk..

That video shows how EPIC (and celver) Clarkson is, most celebs get a pie in the face like that and they'll go nuts, but with Clarkson he takes it and then defeats the protest with "to much sugar".

That's why i love Clarkson, you can do anything to him and he still comes out on top :D.

i agree am not gonna boycott the program just because i think he's a rude twat...

he is funny in the show. but if you insult people (maybe he wasnt trying 2) in public you can see why they might be offended...

a lot of his banter/pisstake is good natured i feel but he goes one step 2 far.

he strikes me as the kind of idiot tourist that would embarass me abroad by being british...no class and all mouth!

He's funny. I liked the show when he went to Detroit and got into a large American car from the 70s. He commented on its floaty, wallowy suspension "if you can imagine yourself sharing a waterbed with a baboon doused in itching powder, only then you can get an idea of the ride." :D

I was actually laughing with some people at work today about how silly the uproar about his comments were, and i come on here and there is a thread about it, so slightly disappointed.

For one, this is Clarkson being Clarkson, for years he has made offensive comments, and with every new one it makes him even more high profile, which likely increases his salary.

I've never been offended by him and i'm Scottish, so like the American's i've also had a fair amount of comments thrown towards my nation, but i laugh it off as he is clearly the best presenter on Top Gear, for anyone wanting proof go watch last years Christmas DVD's where May/Hammond did one and Clarkson did his own, and see how horrible the May/Hammond one is.

I also partly agree with him as well, maybe because i've always worked within the private sector, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to see people who are supposed to be there to help just walking out their job, if financial gain is their main goal in life i wish they picked a different profession.

I agree workers shouldn't be taken advantage of, but many, if not most people don't have the luxury of a union or a pension, so like Clarkson, alot, if not most of the general public think people who strike are just greedy and lazy.

Sorry ,unions are run by nothing but a Bunch of corrupt thugs , They could care less about the workers , Only thing they care about is there own Power and influence , There is a reason Unions membership has declined in the private sector , They failed to adapt to the global market place and forced Companies to move operations Offshore

At one time there was a need for private sector unions , They have helped shape alot of the Labor laws we have today

Now the public sector unions is a whole deferent animals and should be Outlawed , These workers already have some of the best and strictest labour laws and protection in the country , Only thing the public sector unions are doing is strangling the country , From Local to state to Fed Governments , You just have to look around the country at the states that has had democrated control for last 30 or more years , Each and everyone is going broke and are in such bad financial state of crisis because of the public sector unions , At the end its the amarican people as a whole that well be paying for it

Citizen's united ?? Wow you having issue with a conservative point of veiw ?

Conservative in this country only have a hand full of outlets to express there veiws ,while the liberals have the majority of the tv news and print Media even though the liberals are the minorities in this country , The majority of this country is center right and all the data shows this ,

yes, unions are the voice of the people lmao

6 figure salary, their whole job relies on strikes lol

unions have gone exactly the same way as what companys have, money is the most important factor to them.

Exactly, Unions aren't a charity, unfortunately i found that out the hard way even though i was a huge fan of F.I.S.T when i was young lol.

Seriously though, it is a little bit sad to see how it has ended up, but times are tough, and while the richest should do their bit, we all know they won't as they are the minority.
So even if these strikers get what they want, and it's a big IF, then who will be the next sector to get fecked over to stop the country going the way of Greece etc...

The truly comical thing is that his comments were not directed at bashing the strikers, anyone who has seen the full interview should be able to work out that he is actually taking a pop at the BBC's PC mad can't have an opinion about anything policy.
