It's Free, but is it worth it?

    Hi,

I have posted recently about my dismissal of XP until it gets less bugular. However, the 2 guys I work with have just got 2 new machines and they have Windows Millennium.

The machines have also been bundled with a FREE UPGRADE TO XP HOME voucher...I have been hearing about the draconian Microsoft registration/I know what's in yer computer ya Bas' process and wonder if anyone knows how serious this is in relation to having other software on your computer which you may be 'trialling'.

The upgrade is free though and the existing OS is legit. Will it bring benefits for guys who like to process graphics, audio and play network games until their heads fall off.

The Current System Specs:

P4 1.5 w/ Intel 850 MoBo
256 MB PC800
32 MB Geforce GTS PRo
SB LIVE 1024
40 GB (ATA 100)
16x DVD
12x Writer
Accton TX Network Card
19" Monitor
WIN ME registered.

Thanks,

XP is for most people, far more stable the ME. You like to process graphics? You will love XP from ME, its memory manegement is much better !
Audio will properly be better too. And most games run perfect.
Go for it !

    Thanks MM,

As you may have noticed, I have been fairly anti-XP...but as this offer applies to my 2 cohorts, I may as well use them as guinea pigs and keep my machine sweet on Win ME until I am assured of it's 'well backed' stability and compatibility stance.

I have been looking at some of your Pro-XP posts and you seem happy with the results...

...I shall advise them accordingly now!!!

Cheers MM!
Don't wish to but-in here, but having been using XP through RC-1 to final build (2600), I also can state that it is solid as a rock!! Very stable, good with most games - one or two 3d games crash/freeze, others don't, so I guess it's a game issue for the original developers to fix. I'm still dual-booting till 100% sure, but I must be about 95% at least sure, that XP is the way to go.
Smooth, fast, stable as a building full of horses, and looks good.
What more could a person want?

I've been using XP RC's and so far I've been very impressed with it - I went through hell and back setting up my system on Win2K where I had to install drivers and SP2 in a pretty particular order or it all went pear shaped. Xp installed first time - no nasty little exclamation marks in device mangler and has been solid since install. V impressed so far.

This message was edited by Alyson_J on 26 Oct 2001 07:52 PM
