Best combo right now for Image Quality + Performance is 1440p Screen (around 120hz) + Gtx 1080. It will run smoothly while providing you with a nice 1440p picture.

4k is demanding, expensive, and needs even more expensive hardware to drive it.

Depends if one wants to use all those display Hz or not ;) When I was running 2560x1440@144Hz I did have trouble running all games at 144fps even with a OCd 1080Ti. But I guess for the most part you're right :)

    142fps*

That's why I'm not saying 144hz. Difference above 100hz is minimal, while the performance demand / heat / hardware to run it is much higher.

To be honest even 120hz is high, ideally 100hz 1440p with gtx 1080 for various games. Unless of course, you focus on shooters like CS, then 1080p is the way to go.

You're referring to the Rivatuner FPS limiter thing (2fps below monitor refresh rate)? Yea I've actually grown tired of doing that trick :) I really don't feel the difference between NVCPL V-synced 95fps (my current refresh rate) and Rivatuner FPS Limiter 93fps.

I'd say I feel the some difference between the 95fps I have now and 144fps I used to have. But I remember that I was running 120fps when the 144Hz 3D/2D clock was present and I cannot say that I feel the difference between 120Hz and 144Hz. Anyway, I've grown used to 95fps and the 21:9 format so all is well for now.

I agree that the 1080 can do 1440p@100Hz quite well.

Ended up returning it today. Not so much for the rumors of 11xx coming soon, but I needed the money for something else.
    Love long return-policies :D
