A while ago, I was offered to take an old car off of my grandmother's hands that she drove for about 12 years. I finally had a chance to check out the car thoroughly and snapped some pics. This thing is dusty as hell and needs a bath. I was told it was garaged in early 2001 as it needed some minor work. Exterior wise it's ok, No dents or dings. My brother who is a mechanic and a car guru says it needs a new starter and battery as well as some other small things. I'm just wondering if any of you guy's here at guru that know a thing or two about cars can give me some suggestions about it or tips (Besides crushing it, heh). Just wondering what other people's thoughts would be on it since it's going to be my first car. Anyway Heres some pictures of it. Btw It's a 1984 Mercury Lynx.

That's all really. It hasn't been stored in the best conditions as the garage it's in was built in the 1930's (I think) and hasn't really been kept clean for a while.

    So any Suggestions/Tips/Insults ? :D

    CLEAN IT!!!!!!!!!

when a car sits that long with out starting your going to have some trouble getting it to start

your probably going to need to replace a bunch of gaskets and seals

new oil, new gasoline (empty out the old gasoline and put new stuff in), check the tire make sure they have good tread and check the air pressure.

    replace all the filters

Check all the fluids basically, plus the starter and battery like your brother said.

i dont think its worth getting it to run really, unless your bored and want a project and have money to throw at it.

It's mostly a Project that me and my brother want to work on. I don't know how bad it is or how good it is but It's being towed to my house this weekend and I'll have a chance to clean it inside and out and let my uncle(another mechanic) look at the engine and see what's up. I kind of don't want to give it up or junk it as I kind of grew up with that car and it's been in the family for a while. I'll update the pics after I get it cleaned up and get a chance to pop the hood.

I'll have to get back to you on that dudecat, I'm a bit of a car noob. It basically is a Ford Escort. I think mercury is a sister or a jointed company of ford.

Yep mercury is made by ford motor company. I am a huge ford fan that is why i noticed the resemblance. Being that old it more then likely has a 2.3l or the 2.2l 4 banger with carburetor injection (early forms of fuel injection). The have issues with timing belts so watch out for that. Other then that they will run forever. Note though the 2.3 had alot of issues back then.

All those little scrapes in the dirt on the glass look like little handprints, you could say the car is haunted and sell it for $100,000 on eBay motors. That's all the advice I can think of.

That was my first new car I ever bought cept mine was black in color and the year was 1985. My car payments were $135.00 dollars a month for 4 years. The car ran pretty good for years and then I sold it in 1990

The one in the picture looks like an 85 1/2 to 89 Ford Escort/ Mercury Linx. I could tell for sure if I saw the front headlights, though the tail lights look like the 85 and a half model (ford redesigned the body style after the 85 models and kept that up to 89 after 89 they redesigned it again at 90 until end of production)

Little 4 banger engine, and it still should get decent gas millage. Like the other poster said above, change all filters, new gas, new oil, new coolant, new plugs and maybe new wires and distributor cap/rotor.

Clean it and wax it up, should be a good getting around town type of car for you. Not a good long trip type of car, probably will vibrate and shake to death over 70 mph. Balance tires and check alignment.

Blast from the past for me :approval:

Well I was told it's an 84 but No one is really sure. Here is the best picture I could get with at least one of the headlights in it. Can't get any better pictures of the front until I get it out that garage unfortunately.

It's an 85 1/2 model Mercury Linx. But to be sure, check the driver side door, there should be a label there telling the model/year and other specs unless it was ripped off of there.

Yeah I like the bag too, leave it there..LOL

This is from someone who first learned to rebuild engines and transmission with their dad 32 years ago and has been doing it themselves ever since - all your engine/ transmission seals and gaskets will be shot. Your brake master cylinder, brake lines, calipers and wheel cylinders are likely gummed up and corroded. I don't have the time to look up the exact specifications and options on that car but if it has a carburetor then it will likely have to be completely rebuilt (needle and seat, float, seals and gaskets). If it is fuel injected (unlikely) then all your injectors are likely shot. All your filters will be shot. You may have bearings that have corroded and are now going to seize on you. The list goes on.

Of course the above information is based on a car that has been sitting unused for 6 years even in a garage.

If you had a 1968 Ford Thunderbird Coupe I would tell you to get to work on the restoration.

A 1984 Mercury Lynx was built to be a disposable car that would generally die at about 130,000 miles. I say see what you can get for it at the local bone yard.

Car looks like it's in decent shape..I built my first car. Was a '82 Celica GT and I took parts from various other models. Just make sure oil and coolant and everything changed. You don't want to blow a hole out the side of your engine. I'd do it yourself or get it towed to a garage.

    best thing u can do,

    1. get it running (cheaply as possible)

    2. Drop in a Chevy 4.3L Vortec

    3. Race the h3ll out of that thing
