Is there ANY driver better than 182.50 for 8800GT?

    [Disclaimer]

    I do not:
    * have hardware that has only been on the market for two days.
    * have Quad SLI'd dual cards.
    * get upset over 20 points lost in 3DMark 06.
    * need features that have no practical use whatsoever.
    * have something to prove.

I know this may offend many (perhaps most) people here, but I am posting anyway.

    [/Disclaimer]

Greetings. It seems every driver since the 185 series has been plagued by bugs, inefficiencies, optimizations for a few games (or benchmarks) at the cost of the rest, terrible support for older cards, stability issues, et cetera. What I'd like to know is if a driver exists out there, even in the wild, better than 182.50 for overall, non-specific usage. I don't mind a 10% difference in FPS, but I can't stand drivers that are so broken that they cause you to lose video output on a clean install, or give you a BSOD on the start of a certain game.

Am I just wasting my time by wishing for drivers that actually work?

I have never had a single issue with any whql driver and and even with 99% of the beta ones. Im currently on windows7 and the 257.21 and this driver too, works like a charm.

    197.77 works best for me.

I'll admit, 182.50 was a great driver for me and my 8800GT too, and I found myself going back to it time and time again.

The Quadro driver 258.49 seems to be working fine for me atm....

I can confirm, the 257.21's seem the most stable on mine and perform great too.

I can confirm that 257.21 is the best driver for my 9600gt (practically the same as 8800gt)

DO NOT USE 258.49, broken as hell, contrast is through the roof making some photos and movies (Dolan's Cadillac on Bluray) unwatchable.

Also crashes and artifacts in AC2 and COH.

    But yeah, 257.21 is superb.

I can again confirm, the 258.49's have beautiful IQ but get very unstable when stressed; had multiple crashes in BF:BC2, ArmA II and L4D2 before going back to the 257.21's.

8800GT is quite a powerful card. I recommend you use either 197.45whql or 257.21 whql. Both drivers have worked best for me on my office machine which has 8800GT.

Thanks for the replies. It appears it is between 197.45 and 257.21 as possible candidates. However, I've known there to be a few significant issues as of late, particularly DX8 games not working, AA not working, profiles not saving, z-buffer corruption, scaling not working (output resolution scaling, not SLI scaling), and other things such as that. Do 197.45 or 257.21 have any of those issues?

I know I'd be missing out on SSAO and OpenCL if I choose to stay with 182.50, but I don't know of any games that use OpenCL and I don't have enough VRAM to make use of SSAO.

    I would suggest 257.21

I have a 512 9600gt OC and with the new drivers you can enable 'performance' AO which is fantastic.

They are also significantly faster than the 19X.XX series.

In short, no reason not too go with 257.21.

182.50 was the best driver i've used for my 8800gt and my gtx280, 191.07 was the nest best a minor performance hit but it adds ambient occlusion and some game specific boost, i'd give that one a go.

I must be one of the unlucky ones as well because I haven't been able to find any better than the 182.50's for my sli 8800gtx's either. Part of that is my own fault because of my inability to give up my Fallout addiction which is the game that primarily has issues with the newer drivers, although a general increase in game studders is present in many of my other games as well. Oh well half way through my new system build so hopefully I can finally say goodbye to legacy drivers with my 2 gtx470's.
