I've been thinking about upgrading to Vista, but I keep hearing rumors that games don't run as well on Vista than XP.

Remember that xp has had 6 years of driver tweaking so no great surprise if games run a little faster with xp.Must say though the games Ive tried have all run fine and if there is any loss Ive not noticed it.

I don't think there ever has been a new OS release with faster gaming performance than its predecessor. More features and better looks always lead to worse performance. Vista is no exception. We still have to see how DirectX 10 games will run on Vista.

I thought games would run a little slower but...

    Counter Strike: Source

    XP Professional 32-
Settings- 1280x1024 all high, reflect all, 4x AA, 16x AF, adaptive AA, high quality AF

    Stress Test score: 211 FPS

    Vista Ultimate 64-
Settings- 1280x1024, all low, simple reflections, no AA, no AF

    Stress Test Score: 138 FPS

Settings- 1280x1024 all high, reflect all, 4x AA, 8x AF, adaptive AA, high quality AF

    Benchmark Score: 133 FPS

So I lose 5 FPS if I change from low to high, and lose 78 FPS from XP to Vista.

I'm trying to work this out, I don't mind getting a few frames less on Vista but this is almost a 40% performance decrease.

I haven't run any benches, but UT2004 feels damn choppy on Vista x86... and that ran smooth as a baby's butt on XP :(

Don't the only 5 FPS variation between 1280x1024 all high, reflect all, 4x AA, 8x AF, adaptive AA, high and 1280x1024, all low, simple reflections, no AA, no AF in Vista, seem to point to a possible bottleneck, or resolution bound scores. Like what you might see when doing graphics benchmarks and hitting CPU bottlenecks or resolutions.

Well Vista thinks my bottleneck is my processor and it got the lowest rating on their scoring system at 4.4. It's only single core and did its job very well on XP.

I also tried going down to Vista 32 bit and also disabling the aero interface. Still the same poor performance. I'll be in a server idle with about 100 FPS, turn and it may go down to 70, see another player and maybe 30 maybe 60 it's not consistant... but it jumps around enough where it's not smooth gameplay.

So if that was in a 6 person server I really don't want to play on anything higher.

Downloading all my XP drivers now and am going to reformat back to Professional.

I see you are running crossfire.I dont know the current state of ati drivers with vista but if they are anything like the nvidia drivers then id guess thats where the problem is.Drivers will mature and vista will be a great os for gaming.

I run Vista Ultimate, but I do not play all the most popular games around. I give an example based on "Battlefield2" game, then.

"Battlefield2" runs quite normal, in comparison to XP.
I have not noticed any slow-downs or sluggish performance, at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an ati drive issue. Disabling crossfire only costs me 5-15 fps. I'm dissapointed I was really liking Vista.
