Is GXT280 for physx overkill?

    Hello

I have recently replaced my GTX295 with a GXT580 on my desktop, and on my htpc I have a GTX280. So im thinking about putting the 295 on the htpc and the 280 as a dedicated physx card.

    Now my questions are..
    1) Is the GXT280 too much for physx? Is it enough to buy a GTS450 for example and sell/give either 280 or 295?
    2) Will the GTX280 running hot (compared to normal use) if used as a physx?
    3) Are there any known issues regarding SLI and htpc (like players/codecs instability etc)?
    4) Is the dedicated physx worth it after all?

    Thanks in advance

i don't think the added heat, noise, and power consumption will be worth it, that 580 should handle everything. but why not try it out anyway? If i were you, i would sell the 280 on ebay and recoup some of the money.

Use it .... why not if ya have it and it will only use like 350 core clock or
just run in an energy mode.

If heat is not a problem hook that dude up!

I wouldn't. The power....a 280 uses almost as much power as your 580. Batman AA runs above 45 frames at all times for me maxed with 32csaa and high physx, for a new extra frames it's not worth 225watt extra power consumption.

I'd give it away if I had a friend who would appreciate a GTX 295 upgrade (not just someone who needs a graphics card). If not, I'd sell it to recover some money from it :)

well If I were you I'd have kept that GTX280 were it is (in HTPC)
Sold GTX295 and used the money to get a GTX460 (768mb) for
    PhysX

    This.

    480 with 460 for PhysX

If the 480 can benefit so much from a 460 handling PhysX, then I assume that the 580 would as well. I could be wrong though.

When the GTX 460 was released, one major part of the reviewer's guide was allocated to physx performance. That section spoke of the GTX 460's massive increase in geometry and physx performance over the GTX2XX series, namely the GTX 260. The performance difference explicitly emphasizing physx was massive. Given that, I'd say that a GTX 280 would work fine as a physx card (though it's going to hog a lot of power, but more than likely a GTX 450 would equal if not best it in this usage scenario, and a GTX 460 for physx would likely represent a marked improvement... even the SE variant with less CUDA cores yet more ROPs and higher memory bandwidth than the 768 version. ... Personally I think a GTS 450 likely represents the best power consumption vs performance combo for PhysX out there.

... So, your 280, ummm, if your PSU is cool with it then do it up, it will likely serve well. Just be aware of the difference in performance vs power consumption between it and the newer generation of cards. :)

Is physx available in every game? The only game i play is need for speed hot pursuit and starcraft 2? Will adding a second card for phyx benefit in those games?

The only good games that have hardware physx atm are Batman Arkham Asylum, Mafia 2 and Metro 2033. It would be cool if someone made a list of upcoming hw physx games, like they did for upcoming dx11 games.

@YuKsS These are some numbers at max settings in every game at 1920x1200

    Mafia 2 Physx Med
    GTX295 - Avg 31,5
    GTX580 - Avg 36,5

    Mafia 2 Physx Off
    GTX295 - Avg 55,1
    GTX580 - Avg 64,0

    Resident Evil 5
    GTX295 - Avg 82,8
    GTX580 - Avg 110,3

    Dirt 2
    GTX295 - Min 57,7 Avg 76,9 (DX10)
    GTX580 - Min 83,1 Avg 99,2 (DX10)
    GTX580 - Min 75,4 Avg 92,6 (DX11)

    Lost Planet 2 Benchmark
    GTX295 - Test A Avg 63,5 Test B Avg 56,0 (DX9)
    GTX580 - Test A Avg 75,3 Test B Avg 63,8 (DX9)
    GTX580 - Test A Avg 64,2 Test B Avg 49,1 (DX11)

    HAWX 2 Benchmark
    GTX295 - Max 158 Avg 103 (DX9)
    GTX580 - Max 278 Avg 152 (DX9)
    GTX580 - Max 177 Avg 122 (DX11)

I will test the gtx280 as a physx the following days and I will post back some results.

i wouldnt say its overkill as phys will get more demanding, its already quite demanding if you play mafia 2 with everything turned up high and max resolution.

i plan to keep one of my 295's for phys when i buy my new cards(595's hopefully)

But doesnt physx only use one core? GTX 295 is two core. When i had GTX 295 sli i had one of the core for phys and other three for regular stuff.

yeah you would have to disable 1gpu to use your 295 as physics. then you would have urself a 275

I still have 2 295`s so I know what both cards can do. the 295 is still a good card, but the 580 is dx 11, you get higher minimum frames with a 580, you can use higher levels of aa on a 580. the 580 is much better at physics than a 295, the 580 has more vram 1536 vs 896x2. if your into benching vantage and 3d mark 03 will be higher. 01,05,06 should be about the same. you recently bought your 295, so I would stick with it until the new x2 cards are released. Me, I had 1 295 for 2 years so I was dying to upgrade.
