Is AMD 390 enough for 1080 gaming?

Hi, I'm thinking to buy Gigabyte R9 390 8GB, I'm using Asus 27" IPS LED 1080 native resolution. Is R9 390 enough for 1080 gaming or should I consider another higher end GPU? Because i think it is very cheap GPU around as far as 980 Ti or 980 concern. Please guide that is it worth to buy..?

Uh according to your specs you already have a 290? The 390 is the same card.

 

Can you find a cheap 290 4gb instead? 8gb on a single card is pretty useless unless you use a handful of modded games like minecraft or skyrim etc?

 

Yes, it performs at gtx970 level. Quite enough for 1080p, enough Vram as well.

 

The r9 390 is actually intended for higher than 1080p resolution more so 1440p and that is why it bags an 8 gb of vram. Many will say ''will it can't handle even some games on 1080p at 60 fps, how would it handle 1440p at 60 fps?'' Not all games are created equal, you have games like BF4, Tomb raider, Far cry 4 that will run at 1440p at 60 fps most of the time, and games like ACU that even a gtx titan x has trouble running at 1080p with msaa.

Anyways, to answer your question, yes the r9 390 is great for 1080p and its value shows more when you play at even a higher resolution. I can recommend it, it is a great card at rather good price, depending how much it costs where you live. Now if 1080p is your resolution for years to come and you want to save even more money and have the best bang for the buck, go for either pcs+ r9 290 or tri-x oc. Those cards are now selling for as low as 240-250 bucks at least in the usa. They will give you the same performance since the r9 390 is essentially an oc'd r9 290.

So to sum it up, yes the r9 390 is good for 1080p. If you can find the r9 290 or r9 290x non-reference for way less get either.

The gtx 980 is too expensive in some locations, and the gtx 980 ti is made for 4k and it fails at that, so forget both of those cards. The gtx 970 is also good, but if it costs equally or more than the r9 390 then it isn't worth it.

 

Yes I had 970 but it has Vram issue. I played Farcry 4 and it lagged a lot because of 0.5MB VRAM issue that's why I sold it out and Currently I borrowed R9 270 from my friend.

Yes it did stutter a lot when I used to enable Antitliasing.

 

Lol um you are not supposed to use msaa in fc4 or ACU, doesn't matter what card you have. Well i don't experience stutter with msaa but to drop from 70 fps to 35 with msaa 4x is just ain't worth it. SMAA is the best AA method for fc4.

 

Or you can try MLAA 2.0. on that R9 390 GPU.

 

No, the 380 is the one roughly equivalent to the 290 performance wise. The 390 is faster than the 290.

Having said that, my 270X handles 1080p very well so a 390 should have no problems unless you insist on 60+fps on Ultra settings in every game. 45fps on as low as medium settings looks and plays fine.

 

You are a bit confused (understandably). The 380 is a rebranded 285, it will never reach 290/390 performance levels, it even loses to the 280x in most games. The 290 is the (literal) equal of the 390.

Yea it's enough to max out most games. Though the driver support is absolutely terrible lately. But if your happy with your current driver support then I don't suppose it will feel any worse switching to a 290/390

 

It was a perfectly planned "evil rebadge" operation, if they can't fool all future "3x0(X)" customers with a +100...add +95 to the "confusion".

The problem for marketing/PR dep. is there are people who look something farther than what the nomenclature show us.

The r9 290/390 performs now similar to the gtx 970 at 1080p and coming ahead at times, and performing better at higher resolutions.

The r9 290x/390x is now closer to the gtx 980 with the gap even closer at 1440p and coming ahead at 4k.

The r9 280x (3.5 years old card) has topped the gtx 680,770, and now performs close to a stock gtx 780 in recent titles.

The r9 285/380 is better than the gtx 960 topping it in each benchmark except for maybe cod aw. From there downward amd cards are performing better than their nvidia counter pars.

Only game where AMD suffers in performance is in Project cars, and when a game has an nvidia ad in every corner you should know why.

The Fury/x are the only cards that came short in terms of performance, but they might see improvements in the future.

Cards are delivering and the company is doing fine in terms of driver support, people are just expecting their cards to turn into figher jets.

 

nothing wrong with drivers for single cards.

Mine have been extremely stable. Dont know when the last time i had a BSOD or a TR.

Xfire/SLi is always problematic, on both camps.

 

Indeed. Have no problems with AMD drivers. People so much reporting crashes in Witcher i didnt even get even one from 30+hours of gameplay. Tahiti cards got some nice boost in latest driver, 7800 in firestrike for a 150€ card isnt that bad.

Would take 390 over 970 anyday and probably i will.

 

i get a CTD periodically in witcher3, but its a game issue, not a GPU issue.
