Damn that's a huge number to cut. I knew Intel were big, but I had no idea they were 100K employee big... Hope at least some of those being cut are able to find something in the industry
Hardly surprising with the lack of CPU improvements and strong dollar. I can only assume that they will have to cut even more jobs in the future.
If workforce is not needed anymore i can understand that, but if that 11% of work will be handled to those 89%, they might shoot themselves in the foot.
I hope workers were given early notice and received support/recommendation for next job. If Intel's human resources handeled it right, it's not that bad. Sad, but not bad.
Sales decreasing is perfectly normal. Like Dellers said above, there weren't enough performance increase in CPU arena to justify the upgrade. Not to mention CPU upgrades most of the time means changing the motherboard and RAM as well so it is not as easy as plugging in a new graphics card. I'm still using i7-2600 for years even though I changed my GPU 3/4 times during this time and all of those GPU upgrades were at least doubling the performance compared to previous one. Don't have any intention to upgrade soon too. I MIGHT consider a upgrade when they release a fairly priced 8 core (16 threads) cpu with decent clock speed.
Not surprising at all. I mean if your overhyped next gen cpu gains 1-5% over last 2 gens? No thanks, i'll just keep my old. My upgrade path was Athlon XP 2000+ -> A64 3500 -> Q6600@3.2 - i7 950@3.6 (worst oc i ever did) - i7 4770k @ 4.4Ghz. Or in passmark point: 306->538->2987->5645->12000
Yes... cut down on the small so you can keep the highest earning employees still earning high sickening
It's separating the wheat from the chaff.... Get rid of worst performing 12,000 employees to make way for new higher performing future employees. Also anyway PC industry is dying. Nobody buys PCs with Intel motherboards, CPUs any more amongst the younger generations except geeks and gamers. Mainstream have abandoned PCs for phones, tablets to do their general surfing, browsing, etc. years ago. Also as others said, for those that still have PCs, even first generation CPU that I still have - i7-9xx series - is more than enough CPU power to do anything 99% of people want to do. All required speed improvements has now moved to GPU. And the very annoying marketing, sales tactic of changing a few pins on CPU so people are forced to have to buy new motherboard and memory with these new Intel CPUs mean most people, even enthusiasts, just go **** that, I'm not falling for that scam again and keep what they have.
The question is where does Intel go from here. Which (new) markets to attack and where to focus R&D. Small mobile devices are not working for them. If not for anything else then because they are dirt cheap and headbutting against the likes of Samsung/Qualcomm while selling sand is a tough proposition. IoT same thing. Data centers are obvious target. They need to defend against Qualcomm in small servers and against IBM/OpenPOWER in high-end. And dare I say against Zen!
Hope, that everyone get new job ASAP. I wonder how many of these employees are from their low power cpu department - their tablet solutions didn't become as popular as they hoped.
Generally right, still PC industry isn't dying. Won't because at work you'll still have a PC (and I never had an AMD one at work either, just to mention it). Never in life I had a job that I could handle even with today's best tablet due to a lack of proper specialised software. There are fields where a tablet could never replace a PC. I hope nothing that's related to anything vital ever is handled by a tablet... But on the other hand you are right, it doesn't always need a new computer for work that doesn't change in years. Old computers with outdated OSs running Paris airport's baggage system, for instance. My uncle's old accounting program for his business, still runs on his age old win XP machine, and those two or only things you read in newspapers or notice on the side. I guess that's what's really hurting sales too, first the increases in hardware performance aren't the best, and then it's not even always needed with professional / work purposes. To keep this OT though, it's the culling of the weak. Probably no reason at all for Intel to cut back jobs besides wanting to increase their wealth and the stock holder's dividend.
In the press release they actually said they are doubling down on things like IoT and Mobile devices. "The layoffs were meant to "accelerate [Intel's] evolution from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices.""
Intel is one of the biggest proponents of expanding the H1b guest worker program. They'll be hiring soon enough. When they can't get an American engineer to work for $10/hr, they'll say they can't find any qualified workers and hire guest workers instead at an artificially low wage.

The Gaming PC industry isn't the issue here, it's the opposite. PC Gaming is growing double digits. It's the average desktop user that don't invest in new pc hardware.
